Default Mess-Free Coolant System Bleeding

Hey Guys -

I have a 2001 Disco and I think that I need headgaskets because I keep slowly loosing coolant. Different story... Anyway... I found myself bleeding the system when it was cold out every three days to keep the heat working. This was a very messy job and tends to waste a lot of coolant. I have found a solution to this...

What I did was to remove the bleed screw and take it to the hardware store to verify the thread size and pitch which was M10 X 1.0. Then I went to the auto part store and asked a 10" brake line with a M10 X 1.0 fitting. What they gave me was an adapter and a brake line with a standard fitting. From the pictures below, I bent the brake line into a soft curve and attached a hose. Works like a charm!!! No More Mess and No More Waste of Coolant. If anyone needs part number I can supply CarQuest number but I'm sure any place should be able to supply what I used.

Brilliant! I just did a bleed today and that would have been handy.

If you bleed it properly and change the fluid every 2 years, it will take you probably 10 years to justify the cost of the parts and most people don't worry about loosing a couple table spoons of coolant once every 2 years when bleeding the system.

Snafu - what did you have to change since the disaster?

Not when you do it as much as I have in the last year! It is not the cost of coolant, it is the mess on the floor and engine bay. Perfect example was yesterday as I wanted to make sure I had no leaks after changing everything out, but had to wipe it all down after I bleed it each time.

Actually, if you ran that back to the coolant bottle, you would never spill a drop.

Mike - Maybe I am bleeding the system the wrong way... I takes me more than a few teaspoons to bleed the system, more like a few cups. The parts cost me less that $5 and to me, it was money well spend Vs the mess I had to clean up after I was done. And I'm sure that I'll be bleeding it a few more times until I can pull the heads off.
