I have been looking at discoveries for a while and havent purchased one yet, but the time is near. Ive been looking at a couple different models recently and like both. The first is a '98 LSE with 65k for $8000 and is very clean. The second is an '03 S model for $7,500 with 63k. Both seem to be well taken care of and are clean. Is there one which is prefered over the other or are they both good vehicles? Is one engine better then the other? Any info on which is more reliable or tougher or which is an overall better vehicle would be great. I am looking at anything between '95 and '03. Any help is much appreciated. Thanks

 

I used to own a 98 Disco for about 5 years. It was an amazing SUV and I still miss it. However $8,000 seems very high to me, even though the mileage is low. I know their are some pretty large differences between these two model years. Someone else around here could probably fill you in better. I do know the 03's were known to have several issues with them.

 

I drive an '03 and I love it. You'd probably get more gas mileage with the '98 due to the smaller motor. Check the VIN of the '03 and make sure that it's not in the range for bad oil pumps. If it is, RUN, and don't look back. Also, check with the owner and see if the front driveshaft has been replaced/rebuilt. If not, that should be rebuilt if you choose to buy the vehicle.
I agree with gsd2004, $8,000 seems kinda high for a '98.

 

dependent on where you are located and the trucks history i would take the 98 for the CDL... however i wouldnt pay 8k for it... especially since its going to need head gaskets soon, a front drive shaft rebuild right away and some other 60k maintenance... I would read the thread in the how to section about buying a discovery and offer him what its worth. $5,300
