More EBay MADNESS!!!!
I got my 97 Disco from a guy for $300. It ran but the steering and most of everything else was taken apart. It took me another $1500 to make it road worthy and legal to drive in CA. I find myself throwing money at it all the time for necessity and sometimes not. But the idea that they can sell for $10k+ is so crazy to me... Of course Ebay is the last place anyone should buy just about anything.
Applies to every hobby. You start with something affordable, but by the time you're really into it, your investment is emotional and money's going out of the window like there is no tomorrow. But what's the point of money if you can't spend it on what you love?
I am not a market analyst nor do I know anything of cars - I do own a 2001 Land Rover Discovery II series SE, I think there is another underlying reason for this price increase. It may very well be wishful thinking by many sellers but everyone agrees that the disco 2 is getting a rare commodity - these sellers might very well mirror themselves on Defender owners. Suddenly Defenders went from 5k to 30k overnight and most are/were in deplorable condition. We all know why and the opportunists amongst us assume that Disco's will go almost the same route. my thought.
(little do people know that a nice Defender can be bought for far less than 12K in more than descent condition - only look as far as Malaysia... )

Some people think they can sell one of these for what they've put into it.
When I was buying my Disco I had a good discussion with a friend who writes about cars for a living. His feeling was that popularity and prices of Discoveries are increasing. He cited the good community and enthusiasts around them, common problems and their fixes being well known at this point, and being able to work on them as reasons for them getting more popular. It'll be interesting to see what happens.
I saw that one recently. The price has dropped by $1000....

Ultimately, the market will decided if the Discovery will go up in value, however, state taxes will definitely put a cap on that in WA. Gas and weight taxes are high here. The Discovery weight 4k and going down hill gets about 12 mpg.
For me, I didn't buy this with any hopes of getting money back or making a profit. I bought it because I liked the look, the off road reputation, and because I like to turn wrenches.
