Default More Problems that I need help with. It wont start.

I have been having some issues with my 2000 Disco II. But here is the deal it has shut off on me while driving twice in 2 weeks for no apparent reason. Then when it shuts off I have had to jump it off because the battery has been dying. But I think the Alternator is working because it will charge the battery as this does not happen every time. But yesterday I drove it probably a total of 20 miles. Seven of those twenty miles with a loaded trailer of furniture. We stopped by Outback for a beer and as I am leaving it wont crank, It would try to crank but the engine would not start. Then after the 3rd attempt the battery died. Also yesterday I was at a stop light and the Sport mode and Manual Mode started flashing on the dash and so did the Drive indicator on the dash and the D light on the gear shift. Could really use some help on what to do with this one?

Have you battery tested. If it's good, replace the alternator.

If it's bad, replace the battery and then have the alternator tested.

Before doing any of this, clean the battery terminals on both ends (yes, at the starter and alternator too).

Are you saying it won't crank, as in the starter does nothing? Or are you saying it cranks, but the engine does not start? If it dies while driving and then cranks but will not start, it's probably the crank sensor.

Then you probably have a bad crank position sensor too (check if you are getting spark when it's cranking but not starting).

You still need to deal with the battery and/or alternator. I don't know how you can claim that the alternator is fine if you drove the truck any reasonable distance and then had the battery die after attempting to start it 3 times. If the alternator is fine, the battery isn't holding a charge. Or both are bad.

You have multiple problems, that likely don't have anything to do with each other (aside from your truck being in maintenance debt).

Do you have access to a trickle charger (battery tender)? Charge the battery overnight and read the voltage on it following morning. My guess is your battery is dead/bad. How old is it?

If it's the Crank Position Sensor (CrPS) then check out the write up in the 'How to' section of this forum and then watch this video that Justin from Lucky8LLC did showing how to change it.

I was able to jump it off today drove it around for a while and it cranked back up, the battery seemed to have charged some because it was not slow to crank the second time.

Have you done any of this yet???? The problem might go away for a little while, but it will be back so best to take care of everything ASAP.

Of course not. It "fixed itself". That's good enough.

You've bought one of these things used. You know how they end up looking and why.
