Default Motor continues to run after key is turned off

I have recently run into a bit of a strange problem. My '04 Disco II starts fine, is presently running fine, etc. However, I recently noticed that I'll have an intermittent issue where after I park, I turn the key from the II position to the I or Off position, and the motor continues to run, as long as I have my foot on the brake. If I let off the brake, the motor cuts off immediately (doesn't sputter or die). If I keep my foot on the brake, and take the key out or leave it in the I or OFF position, I get a chime. Of course, this happens intermittently.

My thought is that there is something in the ignition assembly that is wearing out (spring perhaps?) that's causing this. Obviously, my major concern is that I'll turn it off and it won't turn back on again, so I'd like to get this nipped before it becomes more than just a minor annoyance.

Any ideas?

I have come a bit further on this.

The motor only continues to run if:

1. The lights are on.

2. The brake pedal is depressed.

In fact, if the lights are on, you can press the brake pedal to the floor, and the dash lights up just like you switched the key to the II position. Turn off the lights, and the truck turns off completely.

Anyone have any idea what I should check here? I am kind of at a loss as to where to start....

Thanks!

Very Strange... I don't know if a brake light switch can cause all these symptoms, but I do know that they are a common failure on these trucks...

Stop light switch is cheap...give it a try. Would also look into replacing the ignition switch as everything else can be explained by that (possibly the break issue as well...not sure if that's wired through there).
