Motor replacements
Just wanted to start a thread on anyone who has dealt w/the replacement of the 4.6 liter in their Discovery? Cost/ description of work/ recommendations or advice on positives/negatives/ alternatives (read about a installing a 4.3 liter Chevy engine/tranny)?
For my Discovery- it would be academic to replace the motor- Who is going to buy a Disco w/a bad motor when we still owe on it unfortunately. What is typically done?
- replace entire motor (cost m/l?)
- replace block, oil pump etc?
- alternative options?
Anyone want to add to this?
Thanks-

There is no alternative unless you can fabricate and an electronic/engineering whiz. If the engine is in fact toast try to get a used one from will tillery or paul grant and reseal it and give it a valve job.
Swapping to a whole new style and brand engine is really only for those who are mechanically inclined enough to do all the work and fabbing themselves unless you have a friend like that.
You could look at buying
a used 4.6
A new 4.6 complete
Just a new short block (use your old Cyl heads)
Or Cut your losses and sell with a blown motor
Personally assuming it had to be a 4.6/4.0 to go back in I would see how much a used engine or a new short block costs and call around for labor quotes.

I would love to see a few optimistic posts as this will no doubt be on my agenda (hopefully not for awhile) one day. Anyone actually done it?
I have personally seen a Series II with a well-done Vortec V8 conversion at a dealership in Birmingham, AL. If you have about $40,000 laying around it's yours... http://www.redmountainrovers.com/web...er-Series%20II
Here's a link to a company in Australia that sells a Chevy adapter and transfer case for the Disco... http://www.marks4wd.com/products/eng...evy-V6-V8.html

I have only seen one thread about a guy who shoe horned an isuzu diesel in a DII. It took a lot of fabricating on his part. If you got the skills go for it but not many bother as it is a timely and expensive proposition and it takes a skill set and tool set that most do not possess these days.
I just did a compete engine replacement in a 04 Disco with 4.6. It appeared that I had a sleeve drop (turned out to not be the case, but that another story). I purchased a rebuild engine from Turner Engineering in the UK. The shipped it to my house in three days from payment. The engine swap is fairly simple and the quality of the rebuild motor is great. I can send some pics of the work if that would help. The whole project with all fluids, new oil and water pumps was about 5K.
As luck would have it I now have an extra set of Air injection heads and a compete short block both with about 73K on them.
Hope this helps

When a sleeve drops yes, it in not rebuildable. The sleeve is presses into the block and can't be replaced. Turner presses a new sleeve in. It has a flanged edge so it will not slip. Updated design.
The extra short block I have, looks to be just fine. Only 73K. I just replaced it when I did not need to. I will know for sure soon.

I started this discussion knowing that it's a hot topic and will be for those who are in this situation. I actually am not... yet and my Disco does fall in the Vin# range. I wanted to gather as much information as possible and hear as many stories as possible to aid me in the decision as to which route is most feasible.
I would love to see the pictures of the Turner engine install. Unfortunately I am not that mechanical when it comes to doing a swap. I may have a source if/when it comes to this timetable.
Thanks-
