Default Multiple Codes on 2000 Disco II

Good morning to all!

This is my first real post, but I've beenreadingall of your posts for probably a yearnow.

My truck started sputteringslightly about 5000 miles ago, mostly noticeable while the vehicle isstopped.I changed all of the plugs, then when I got the courage up I tackled my wires. That was a week & 1/2 ago and my hands are still sore. Anyway, the same sympoms exist and the exhaust smells terrible. No visible signs of smoke though. Here are the codes I got back with my reader:

P0304 - Cyl. 4 misfire detected
P0171- Syst. too lean (Bank 1)
P1172- Manufacturer control fuel air metering
P0734- Gear 4 ratio incorrect
P0308- Cyl. 8 misfire detected

I should probably add that prior to changing the wires I had more codes along with these. I cleared all of them after changing the wires and so far this is what came back. The new wires are wires that Advanced Auto showed go withmy Disco.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!

Also, anyone know how to get a CD player under the seat unstuck? I can't get my CD's out.

What brand of plugs and wires did you use, what gap??
The 171, 172 and 734 indicate you need to replace your MAF.

Mike, he said that he used Advanced Auto plug wires.
Your mis-fires are because of the crap plug wires that Advanced Auto sells. You are not the first to have this problem and not the first with this problem after installing Advanced Auto plug wires. What really sucks is that you have to do all that hard work all over again, but this time you will be using Magnecor plug wires and this will be the last time that you ever replace the plug wires.
After installing the new plug wires as long as you replace the plugs every 30k you should ever have a mis fire ever again.
But the gear ratio incorrect is the MAF sensor going south.

did the exhaust start to smell real bad after you did the wires?? are you completly sure that you got the wires in the right order?? and just so you know, alot of generic readers will read misfire codes based on firing order and not cyl number, so you might be looking at 2 and 3, not 4 and 8. wires for 2 and 3 are right next to each other... double check

Best Buy can help you with your CD changer. Go to the car stereo department.

No, The exhaust smelled bad before I did the wires. It's overbearingif i'm stopped and my windows are down. I'm fairly certain I got the wires in the correct order - I labeled them as I removed them and drew my own graph, but it was a tuffy trying to see back there. I saw where someone once posted a layout of the wiring design, but it wasnot real specific.

Sorry Mike...I purchased the wires from Olympus Auto Parts, not Advance Auto Parts. Not sure who the maufacturer is. Isthe MAF somethingthat a ordinary person can replace? I'm somewhat technically inclined, but Ihave no idea where it's located or what it entails.

How many greenbacks isTHIS going to run me?

Thanks foreveryone's help BTW. Even though I haven'tposted much in the past,I still enjoy readingthe posters.

Replacing the MAF is super easy. It's just after the airbox and is secured with a couple of clips. Call Tony at Cerrone's as they seem to have the best price ($160 shipped).

edit:
I forgot the phone number (650) 365-4145

Go out one night when it is dark, start the engine with the hood up and wiggle the plug wires, any blue sparks?? Squirt water on them and try again.
Very few of the cheap no name type of wires will work or hold up on a Rover, time for some Magnacor's.
The exhaust smells because of your MAF, which is a 5 minute install.
