Default must the fan come off for a belt change?

Watched the AB video and they took off the fan. Does it have to come off? I don't have the tool and trying to save a trip to rent one.

I think not, but the shroud for sure does.

Also, I've never needed the actual tool set, just an appropriately sized open-end wrench (36mm?). The friction of the belt in addition to a quick hit with a rubber mallet on the wrench loosens it right up.

No you don't have to remove the fan. Pay attention how you take it off tho...

Juke is correct. You can loop it around the fan be just fine. Taking off the Viscous fan clutch is a pain in the neck, I don't miss it in the least.

You can do it. With the fan in place, but with it removed it’s like a 2min job. I now have a large 36mm open end/box wrench. Place it so it’s straight up, hit it with a small sledge & it should break free. I’ve only had one D2 be a PITA to remove & it was due to rust. All my personal LR’s = come right off.

The fan is so easy to remove, you really should remove it.

I bought a fan wrench from Northern Tool for ~$15. Good purchase.

I got the 36mm box wrench from northern tools! No more bending the thin 36mm tools open!

I took the fan off many times, it was very easy. I got the 36mm wrench on ebay for $15. I slide the wrench in and hit the end with a hammer. It always gets unlocked of after the second hit latest.
