My DI rear wiper swap
Hey guys,
So like many people who's posts I've seen, the rear wiper performance leaves something to be desired, finding replacements can be a pain in the a$$, and well... because I'm **** retentive. I had done the DI wiper swap on the fronts last year, and have been very happy with the improved performance. Today at the local salvage lot, while door lock actuator scavenging, I pulled rear wiper arms from both a DI and DII to bring home and experiment with. I wanted something fairly clean looking to retain the rear sprayer. Here's what I came up with:
Needed:
DII rear wiper arm (for tubing and sprayer) or just use your existing
DI rear wiper arm
10-12" of 1/2" diameter heat shrink tubing
1 beer (optional)
1.) Carefully pry the sprayer and pull the tubing out of the DII arm.
2.) Remove the sprayer. I had to cut the tubing near the sprayer.
3.) Route the washer tubing through the tension spring, along the DI arm, with the end of the tubing nested in the U-shaped end of the wiper arm.
4.) Slide the heat shrink over the arm and tubing. 1/2" will barely slide over the U-shaped end.
5.) Push the sprayer back onto the tubing.
6.) Install a new wiper on the arm.
7.) Pull a little more washer tubing through as needed in order for the sprayer to end up in the empty space in the wiper.
8.) Once the routing and mock-up is right, heat the shrink tubing.
9.) Install the DI arm, splicing the washer tubing with a ****** splicer from the hardware or auto store.
10.) Finish your beer.
I'm happy that the more acute angle of the DI arm works better with the spare tire carrier flip, since I never got around to notching it.
