Default my fan broke up

So i was getting back on the parkway after getting gas, and I heard a loud thunk and saw the hood pop up an inch, and I immediately pulled off at next exit an 1/8th mile away, got into a parking lot and turned it off. I opened the hood and my fan and shroud were obliterated, and coolandt leaking on the ground, a couple holes in the newer radiator. also, at the bottom of the drivers side, a cylindrical device with a metal tube out of the center of it is crushed. Power steering? I thought the engine blew up but it ran totally fine. I got towed to my shop that does a bunch of work on it and hopefully monday will see what is happening.

anyone ever see the fan on the fan clutch obliterate? or maybe the shroud got in the way of the fan and caused it to break up?

I have a newfan clutch, 50,000 miles on it, can I reuse the clutch and get the fan replaced? or is that a one piece thing

all the best

This is not the first fan exploding thread that's popped up on here recently. I find this most disturbing. Please upload some pictures for us to see. Let this also be a warning to other D2 members that now is probably the time to start thinking about replacing your old brittle fans. Personally I would not even bother with a used fan because its probably going to be just as old and brittle and likely to fail. For $125 you can get a brand new cooling fan COOLING FAN V-8 EFI P38A & DISCOVERY II, RND388, ERR4960 - Rovers North - Classic Land Rover Parts and have peace of mind that your unit wont explode. Luckily I already have a new fan on my list of things to replace very soon.

Sorry to hear about your misfortune mate and best of luck to you.

Consider yourself fortunate if you don't have to replace water pump as well. Toss the old fan clutch.

if you get 99-02 fan you can replace the clutch separate, other wise you will always have to replace the fan and clutch as one unit. you may want to check the water pump for play.

I suspect that fans are not just exploding from being old. I have used fans here ranging from 85k-200k miles and there is nothing brittle about them. They are extremely strong.

Either the water pump has too much play, radiator shroud has come loose, engine mounts are broken, etc.

It happened to me once. The radiator shroud had not been secured at the bottom(my mistake). I drove like that for close to 3k miles before it got caught by my fan.

Yeah, not the first plastic fan to self destruct. That's why I was proactive years ago and replaced mine with a metal fan.
No idea if one is available that will fit DII's though.

Fan broke up?
Well better then your wife or girlfriend breaking up with you..

You got off easy.
As long as your hood is not dented - you have no worries.

Your fan clutch may have locked up into direct drive mode.
Going up the parkway - you were probably in 3rd gear and revving the engine to pull the grade.

Guessing you were heading up Greentree hill.

Your fan was probably heat damaged from years of excessive heat.

Jaguar fans on the XJS used to fly apart too.
