Default My mechanic burned my disco.. omg

hey guiys,

well while my disco was having the engine rebuilt the mechanic needed to roll the window up after he pulled the engine. He told me that he connected the battery and rolled the window up and then shut the key off. 4 mins later he told me the car was on fire and smoke was billowing from the cabin. from what i can tell i ned the following replaced or the truck will be written off!

-new headliner/with plastic trims etc
-Forward sunroof motor / switches / wiring harness
-Climate control on dash is burnt
-complete center console/wiring harness/ switches
-shifter assembly/ wiring harness
-Drivers seat complete

i'm sure theres stuff i cant see but my hope is they total it.

i only have PLPD and not comp/collision... so i'm relaying on his shop insurance to cover the damages.

i paid 6900$ for the 2003 D2 4 months ago and i've 6k in engine rebuild and parts.

what should i do if they total it... buy it back? strip it?

it sounds to me like with the lack of grounds from the engine that when he turned the key on there was no going back!!!

heres the pics http://www.facebook.com/album.php?ai...29041620&saved

Contact his insurance company and have it totaled, take the money and buy another. Fire damage is almost impossible to correct, the wiring harness will need to be replaced and the body metal will never hold paint again.

I dont have a Facebook page...
But why in the hell would you only have PLPD on a $7000 car? ARE YOU NUTS??!!!!!!!! SERIOUSLY!!!!
Unless you have the liquid cash sitting in your bank account to replace it (called being self insured) ALWAYS HAVE FULL COVERAGE!!!
This is the second time this month that somebody only had PLPD on their truck and it was a total loss.
Full coverage would have cost you a extra $50 per month maybe and then you could easily get a new truck.
His shops insurance will cover the truck, they will total it because fire damage gets things that you can in no way see.
Smoke damage alone will fry all of your electrical components.
His shop's insurance will give you the value of the truck, depending on what type of insurance he has you will either get what the truck is worth in this condition, which will be about $1500, or they will give you full replacement value.
Had YOU had full coverage they would have given you full replacement value.
If you only get the current value of the truck you can take his shop to court to collect the differance.
Best of luck to you and sorry about your loss.

I need to add, if you still owe money on this truck to the bank you are still legally obligated to make the payments and any money that you get from a insurance company MUST go to the bank.
So...if you still owe $6000 and the shops insurance pays you $1500 for the truck you still owe $4500 and you are not only out a truck you are also out the $4500.
If you dont pay the money back to the bank they WILL sue you for it because there is nothing for them to repo.
And lets not forget that unless the title is clear (no secured interest on title) a scrap yard cannot take it from you.
The title must be in your name free and clear.
So you may have a burnt out lawn ornament sitting in your front yard for the next 4 years.

Sorry for your loss. Those pictures are painful to see. Always have full coverage!! I learned the hard way and have had full coverage ever since.

I'm warning you Spike, they aren't pretty

Sorry about what happened, OP but it seems to me that it's entirely your mechanic's fault and he should be responsible for it.
