Interesting, mine has a very very light patter at idle that I thought was just normal V8 grumbling. My BMW X5 and Jaguar XJR were noisier. It is more audible underneath the car than above it, but I figured it was easier to hear through the exhaust.

I wish I had checked the flex plate while everything was apart. I'll try not to have noise paranoia. Mine is nowhere near the point of being an embarrassment or diesel like.

My flex plate has gone bad as well. And as a result of allowing the torque converter to wobble around, it has worn the center shaft that goes to the flywheel. Does anyone know if this shaft is pressed on or is it welded on?

How did you see the crack? Taking the gearbox out or taking oil pan off? I took my oil pan off but I could not see crack and looking at the pictures posted earlier I don't know if you can see that part of the plate with then oil pan off?

I need to fix this noise or it's going to get a hammer takening to it.

I have the tick but it is only when the engine runs cold! After warm up it disappears completely... HMMMMMMMMMM?

I also have that wonderful '04 motor everyone talks about! First around 20k miles they found a camshaft bearing in the oil pan but the camshaft had all the bearings in it! Then at 45k it blew the Oil Filter out the bottom of the motor, and most recently at 70k it wore out lobe 18 on the cam shaft and had to do a rebuild from the cam shaft up! =) I’ve convinced myself someday it will just stop happening and be the beast it was born to be!

The blown out oil filter is usually the result of the bypass valve for the oil pump (not oil filter) sticking - then oil PSI climbs well above the 50 PSI spec, the filter splits or pops off.

If yours is a cold tick, might go through the SAI things, it normally activates when engine is cold, there have been posts about an SAI induced tick.

I have not had time to dig into my truck again but I should have some time soon. I can not believe someone does not know what this noise it. I have 4 other Discoverys in my area 3 have the exact same noise and have been making the noise for over a year and 1 has 110k on it and has never been apart and not making the noise. This is not just a tick it's the loudest tick I have ever heard and I have been a tech for 22 years the tick sound seems to me faster that if it was a sleave moving up and down on engine revolution its like twice as fast like lifter and cam. One of the guys took his to the dealer and they changed lifters no cam and it still made noise now they tell him it's a sleeve. All three trucks that I listened to have the exact same noise so this must be common and someone has the answer for sure.
