Default Is my tranny (or T case) about to go boom?

This is a pretty healthy clunk that seems to have just started. I’ve done a tranny service and it’s not leaking. The U joints and flex disc in the rear are in good shape and I recently changed the oil and greased the front shaft. I’ve also recently changed the fluid in the diffs.

With winter coming and the barn not being done yet, I sure hope the T case isn’t nuked. It was supposedly changed prior to my purchase.

And sorry I can’t fully imbed the video, so you’ll have to click the link.

Yikes, that is not good. Almost assuredly tcase. I would check the center shaft, I bought one where the nut on the center shaft had come off and the shaft backed out. Try shifting the tcase in to low or shifting the CDL in to locked and see if it still does it.

I just took it for a spin around the property and did 4 low, 4 high, CDL, etc, even got the TC going and it didn’t do it at all or (at least didn’t seem to) feel strange.

As I’ve been struggling with P0501, I’ve wondered if they goofed the T case install.

How would I check the center shaft?

I pulled out the T case manual. Is it the nut inside of 22 in this pic that you are referring to?

No, it's the nut on 19. You can see it from under the truck, backside. Given that it stopped when you shifted it I think you did not have it all the way in gear.

Ah that makes sense. I’ll go out and check it here in a minute.

Someone from a failbook group thinks it could be something in the valve body denoting wear?

That nut is tight, so I’m good there. I’ve not changed the fluid in the T case yet, so I might try that too.

I just started it and gave it a go and it was back to being perfect. I think I’m going to check the tray fluid too just as a matter of course.
