Default Mysterious ATF Leak

Morning All

Backed my '99 Disco out of the drive Sunday to find a rather large ATF stain on the drive. It was under the right side of the car. If I had to guess it was probably 1/2 pint or so. It was defenitely ATF, nice and pink. My drive is pretty severly sloped (like 3-4 rise to 12 run) so it made a large football/rugby ball shaped stain. The transmission fluid still checked in the operating range though, and it runs shift just fine not like it is low or anything. Also it has not happened since.

Any ideas? Is ther a releif valve or breather in there somewhere that occasionally puke out some fluid? As always any help is appreciated.

D1 or D2?????
Could also be power steering fluid, same fluid.
Crawl under and look, get back to us.

From previous posts, it is listed. D2, which does not use ATF for Power steering. You need to get under there and find the leak. But, since it was stated that the fluid checked ok, I am thinking it is a D1.

Do you have a dipstick? D2 tranny's are sealed and there is a specific procedure to check the fluid level. How did you check?

If you do have a D1, I knw the fix for your rear door problem too.

It is most likely the Transmission cooler pipes leaking (or one of them), they are known to leak, weep, split or even pop out the crimp/swage completely. Check them thoroughly, and replace them ASAP if leaking, as it will empty the gearbox of oil in seconds if they split / fail whilst driving.

Happened to me about a month ago. details here. Mines a TD5, but they are the same on the V8 to.
