Time will tell but that is what I am thinking with what little run time I have had so far.

Not dead, just busy.

I poked around with a stethoscope recently, and noticed an interesting coincidence in the tapping.

This little bastard has a very similar tapping sound as what I'm hearing generally, but at double the rate. The electrical tape and damaged wire housing makes me think someone's been screwing with it previously.

After consulting the RAVE, this appears to be the SAI vacuum solenoid valve. I checked the two SAI valves, and they didn't seem to be the source. Next time it happens, I'm going to poke the purge valve as well, and see if I hear something matching the general tapping.
Worst comes to worst, I figure I can just unplug the solenoid, have the computer throw a fit, and see if the tapping instantly stops.

So I have that strange sound as you can see from previous threads. Done so much work and its still there. Had lots of boiling over issues and an Land rover Expert told me a liner had gone. I drove home to junk the engine with no water in the block and lots of smoke. Played around with it a week later come to find out that the brand new expansion tank had a split underneath so when the engine heated up it sucked in air. Now I'm driving around with a strong, back from the dead engine but still with a oil light at start up and tapping at acceleration. At this point I'm leaving it alone!!
So no points at "whats that sound!"

I have a similar noise, but it doesn't go away at higher RPMs. It does fade in and out depending on activity. The screwdriver stethoscope tells me it's probably cavitation in the steering pump or ACE pump, probably because the fluids need flushing and filters need changing.
Have you looked at anything like that?

I guess I will confuse it a little more (honestly not trying to hijack your thread but we have the exact same noise). After putting about 2k on the engine after all the work I did the noise has all but disappeared, I thought I heard it once but couldn't be sure. Before I would have known 100% I heard it. I have an Amsoil oil change soon and I will see if that changes it or it comes back, I as running basic dino oil until I knew if I needed to take it apart again.

I've had the throttle body nipple break off an expansion tank, and I have a relatively new(2 years?) tank in there. I'll take a look at that and the cap to see if there's anything sneaky going on there. I'm not seeing any of the other symptoms you describe, so hopefully I'm in a different boat

I don't have ACE, and power steering was changed a while back. I did hear mention there was a power steering leak at one point, but haven't gone to track it down. I wasn't loosing fluid last I checked, so I'm guessing they were just mistaken. Probably time to change it anyway, as I can't remember when it was changed without digging through paperwork.

THIS THIS THIS!

I've had this exact same noise just like your situation jwigum! I still have the noise and in fact its worse than ever. I think its top end related cause it definitely is not coming from the block.

One major place to look is the rocker shafts.

There are little holes for the oil passages they get blocked and make similar noises.
I wish people were closer, i'd help them look. LOL

Slipped liner. I heard one like that when I was looking at a 2004 used
in a car lot.

You need to PIN the liner.
