Need an engine
Guys,
I need a engine for my 2000 Disco without secondary air. I was almost scammed out of $2k this week for a "good" used one. Who do you all recommend? I have talked to Cannibal and Atlantic British, just don't know if I really want to spend that much on a car I haven't gotten to actually drive. My biggest fear is ordering something that looks great in pics and getting a total POS when we unbox it to install. Any ideas?

I bought a parts rover about a month ago, primarily for the engine. I have a thread somewhere about converting my 2000 Disco II from a 4.0 to a 4.6. The one I bought had a head gasket leak and I spent less than a thousand dollars for the whole truck. I got far more than that off of it not even considering the engine and transmission, which I am going to use. For about a thousand I am making the engine brand new with the help of a local shop. I also got a bigger transmission out of that deal. That's my new solution.
I've also bought one from craigslist. Just drove to Dallas and picked it up, then dropped it right in my Rover with nothing but fluid changes. I agree that is a crapshoot but I got lucky and three years later that is the 4.0 I am driving every day.
Unless your engine is complete toast I think you get a better result by taking it to a machine shop and having it redone. This was my first time to do so and while I have not installed it yet I am confident I will be happy with it.

Disco has 103k miles on it. A couple was driving it on the interstate, ran it low on oil and the cam froze. Lots of internal damage from there. I really don't know if it would be worth trying to save at this point. The local dealer (only rover shop in town) has torn most of the motor down to diagnose it for the previous owners.
I am fairly mechanical, have lots of tools but usually work on brakes and suspension work. I have never rebuilt an engine or done head work, but can follow directions well. Goal is to have the Rover running by winter as my current driver is not going to handle snow well.

you may want to check turner engineering last time i checked they were selling complete rebuilt 4.0 without and exchange for under $4k. and i have never seen a complaint about turner engineering.
but i did check a post that paul grant put up a short time ago about an Ebson green dII with a rebuilt motor in it, he may still have it
