Default Need Help ASAP

Service engine light is blinking. I took it to a shop and they said that ECU is bad, and wants to charge over $2,000.00 to fix. Is there another way around going to the dealer ? Also can the ECU make the rig overheat ?

First off. You can relax. You don't need help as soon as possible.

Second. Your ecu might be bad, but probably not.

Best thing you can do is go and invest in a code reader yourself. That way you don't have to run to a shop when a light flashes and panic when they quote big numbers at you. You will probably find its something minor and easy to fix. Then name and shame the garage that tried to sting you for 2 grand.

Did they tell you the codes the flashing light was indicating?

Edit. And your over heating. Buy an UltraGuage. Stop driving your car until you know what the temps are doing and the engine is trying to tell you. You could turn a small thing into a biiiiig thing.

I have a 03 Discovery II. I am located in Tampa, FL. The shop didn't tell me the codes. What scanner code reader do you suggest I buy for future problems ?

Also check your oil and coolant. If you are overheating it could be a blown head gasket and the flashing SES/CEL is because you have major misfires

I'm a huge fan of the UltraGuage. Small. Fits on the dash and runs all the time. Tells you temps, voltages, codes, pending codes, resets your CEL so you can see what pops back again, has warning bells which you set to your liking. All sorts of stuff I havnt found yet.

Thing it doesn't do is ABS codes.

As Abran says, do some simple checks for head gasket, coolant, oil, anything mixing etc. levels. What symptoms of over heating have you had? Did the needle move from the middle position?

I am in Tampa and can highly vouch for MITANIX Indy LR repair. He is behind the Mercedes dealer on Dale Mabry. Good luck

Please take this advice. Get your own code reader. Any code reader will tell you the codes as long as it's ODB2. You might need to google each code and they'll probably bring you back here where lots of people bring their problems. I would recommend getting a code reader likes suggested earlier. Myself, I've got a Scan-Gauge it was $99 and it's great. Temps, codes, and lots of other stuff including milage.

FYI, A used ECU is maybe $50 at most and they can be programmed for usually less than ! hour of labour, depending on how cool the shop is.
