Well, long story short..the engine on my 03 disco II blew out a few days ago

I've searched around and these engines are so hard to find..

Can anyone refer me to a yard or mechanic that would possibly have the 4.6 V8 in stock?

I'm guessing based on research the price would be around $2,500 without labor?

Would the 4.0 bolt up?

I just want her back up and running asap!!

There's a school of thought that while the 4.6 engine has a little more torque, the 4.0 is smoother.

My DI will easily keep up with traffic, so it's not like they're dogs.

I believe the blocks are the same.

There's a crapload out there, don't give up.

The 4.0 and 4.6 are the exact same block and heads, only the guts are different.

You know about the oil pump problems with the '03's right?
I would highly recommend a '04 engine.

 

Hey there, Sorry about the engine and i know how you feel.. I had my RR 4.0 get a crack in the block which brought me to but a 04 Discovery so dont feel like you are alone. You can find 2004 engines for about just under $3,000.00 with say 60,000 mile but you are missing the point. They dont have the correct liners or head gaskets.. You will be spending another $3,000.00 in a year fixing your new one.Yes, sorry guys, what replace head gaskets that will fail after another 40,000 miles... I think thats a bunch of crap. I think the first time i ever heard of a head gasket was having to do with a land rover... yes as they act like they did nothing wrong.. , Fuc&&7king embarissing from a company's point of view but i think they think they did nothing wrong.. Get yourself a salavage engine with low miles and rebuild with top hat liners and better gaskets and put a couple hundred thousand miles on your new rig. just my 2 cents. there is also a company that you can get a td300 diesel for about $3,300.00 .. If i had the money and common sense i would convert mine to a td 300 or five and drive till the cows came home..

Same thing happened with my '03. I bought it used back in November...drove it less than a week before the problems started. These blocks are extremely prone to the cylinder liners slipping if the car has ever been run hot. I ended up purchasing a remanufactored 4.6 from Turner Engineering in England. They make a block with flanged liners that nearly eliminate this problem since there is more of a sealing surface for the head gasket and the "top hat" style liner won't slip. A short block will set you back around $4200 depending on what the conversion rate for GBP is. Don't plan on getting a core refund...you'll have to eat that since it costs too much to send it back unless you have access to a commercial shipping account. If you get a used block, if the liner's haven't slipped...they're going to eventually.

 

I found my 04 4.6 at car-part.com. you may get a bad one as others have correctly mentioned but for me it was worth the risk. Good luck.

 

New small block for $2,2oo, adapter, motor mounts, plumbing... you're at the same price as a used rover engine and you don't gotta worry about it head gaskets, liners or cracked blocks.

Your state may not allow those modifcations though.

 

You can't buy a new Rover engine for $2200, hard enough to find a used one for that.

Will, do you want a junk yard engine or a good guaranteed used one? Might check out Roverlandparts.com for one of their SAI 4.6 engines that have been gone thru and inspected.
