1. Please don't take this the wrong way - you have the desire for this pile of posh pre-owned sheet metal - run a carfax and pay an indy mechanic to look at it. Could save you thousands.
2. Shop around - like www.statewidelist.com, which will search all of craigslist in the state of your choice for Rover and sort by city. Handy to see what is out there and how much.
3. Receipts for work or parts like head gaskets, oil pump, drive shaft are all pluses.
4. We have plenty of owners who joined here with a truck they purchased within the last few weeks, only to have head gaskets, overheating, etc.
5. Your research may point you to another year, based on potential problems, availability of CDL, etc.

Hey I fall under the number 4 category. Woohoo I'm part of the club now.
HAVE IT LOOKED AT!!!!
I got mine 2 weeks ago and have, replaced the head gasket and almost all under the hood including Plenum gasket, y pipes psngr side exhaust manifold, had to buy a front drive shaft the guy slapped a jeep spicer on there, weld up the side of the transmission, transfer case had a 1/4 1/4 qt of oil yes that's. 25 of 1 qt, rear diff was white and milky from plugged great her tube, just grabbed sti wires and a heater core for the interior.
I did add a cld linkage though and now its been pretty well gone through.

We have seen poeple buying well maintained low mileage cars, that break. If I can get a warranty I will get a warranty.
When I looked at my car, there was oil every where, couldn't tell where it was coming from and the power steering pump was gone (which is one of the weak points in these trucks). So I asumed it was leaking from every where expect the head gasket, which was done around 15k miles ago. I am running into small issues, which might be my own making, but nothing major yet. My brother had 2 discoveries I and II. When I bought my first 96 Discovery he told me don't touch it, drive it and if ain't broke don't fix it. He never had any problems with his, except for windows and locks. I did touch mine and spent a whole week under it, every thing that I touched broke. I know that the senior very knowlwdgable members of this forum recommends other wise. I have started the process and am almost done and hope that my brother is wrong.
