Default Need Help Navigating Rave Manual

Howdy Folks,

My Discovery is showing a P0705 but I have a question regarding how to navigate the Rave Manual so I can fix that code. I've found the code in the manual and below it and all of the other codes associated with the automatic gearbox, it starts to go into the repairs but I was wondering how I figure out which repairs to do for my particular code P0705 code. It doesn't say which of the ones below the code descriptions I need to do, and all it says below the code is the "Test Book (14, 23)" which I don't know what means. Thanks and have a good one!

Read the Fault Description in the second column. It reads, "Gear position switch, incorrect outputs".

The gear position switch is known by other names too. In the RAVE it's also called "Switch - starter inhibitor" and "transmission gear selector switch". It's also known colloquially as the XYZ switch. Just search in this forum for XYZ switch. Lots of info. A big problem with replacing the XYZ switch is that they've become very expensive. A lot of forum members buy used XYZ switches from well-known sellers.

Yeah I saw that. I bought a used one and have replaced the old one with it but it doesn't seem to have solved the code. I suppose I should clarify what I mean by my earlier statement. I can't figure out which of the repairs listed below the list of the codes and faults are associated with my P0705 code. Thanks for responding!

Perhaps the XYZ switch needs to be adjusted. I just poked around the RAVE and looked at what you are and I think I understand what you are asking and based on the repairs stated below the list. I think what I’m referring to is on page 44-25. I thought I remember someone selling the special tool they are describing there.

I've been looking at your past posts and I think it is just that I didn't do the procedure using the tool so I think I'll need to reset it. If that fails though I was wondering if you have any experience dealing with it if its a circuit problem. The battery and alternator are running fine and it isn't going into limp mode or flashing M + S.

In my experience, the tool for adjusting the XYZ switch is unnecessary (and expensive).

As you can see in the drawing from the RAVE, the tool is used to align the switch so that the hole into which the L-shaped pin is perpendicular to the flats of the selector shaft.

I have always had success just eyeballing it. After the two mounting bolts are tightened, move the shifter through its PRND321 positions to confirm the LCD gear indicator in the instrument panel and the red LEDs on the shifter bezel show the correct positions as the shifter is moved. Even better is to have an assistant in the driver's seat the check the gear indicators to confirm correct display of the selected gear positions.
