You can see the tab in the second set of photos that I ground down to allow it to seat to the gasket.
in the first you can see how warped it had become allowing in water, and I believe letting the mechanism to slip and not engage properly.

Have not had any recurrence of no start since rebuild.
I’d recommend an inspection of the rivets, and preventative rebuild for anyone who has not had this issue.
Really, not a terrible fix at all. I don’t see why it should not last a long time.
