When my 4.6 went tango uniform, and I realized the timing chain was gone, I had the dealer look it over. They offered an engine swap as an option and I could pick where the engine came from.

The third requirement is perhaps the most difficult. I have restricted my search for installers to the New England/New York area as I do not want to have to travel half way across the continent to rectify problems. The requirement that that the installer be responsible for costs of removal and reinstallation due to engine failure eliminates many candidates, and cost eliminated others (some as high as $11K).

Of the few remaining candidates one is a local Land Rover specialist with a good local reputation. His caveat is that the engine be new Land Rover furnished. His reasoning is a remanufactured engine starts with a damaged engine which is rebuilt to standards he has no control over. However, LR warrants their engines INCLUDING removal and reinstallation labor. He also thinks the manufacturing standards and quality are as good as any other auto manufacturer today, hence the reason for this thread topic.

Also of interest, while browsing the Atlantic British (AB) site, I stumbled across a buried sentence indicating that AB would pay labor costs of a defective engine IF the installer was an approved AB installer. I called AB to find out who these AB approved installers were. I think my question caught the fellow off guard, but he said he would find out and get back to me, which he did, indicating that the only approved installer was a Land Rover dealer. I took this as a put off, and I doubted that a LR dealer would even agree to install a third party engine. I decided to call his bluff and called a LR dealer. To my surprise, the dealer indicated that not only they would, but they had installed several AB engines in the past. The second surprise was that their labor was cost was very competitive. I am waiting for a written quote.

Rod, I would only caution you that any new or used stock landrover furnished 4.6 is still more of a timebomb than either motor furnished from either of the 2 mentioned suppliers Cannibal or Great P because of the known liner issue in stock motors. Yea HG and Oil pumps are other issues as well... I have much more confidence in my Cannibal motor than any stock landrover supplied option. They do their best to bullet proof the crap design. Do your research before making your decision. There is a reason all D2 forums are filled with motor issues of all sorts. The stock motor is junk, pure and simple . I am sure you can located an authorized installer for both better motor options in your area...good luck with your decision.

good luck.

1. as stated if you buy a LR engine you are just going to get the same problem as you have.

2. also good luck trying to get someone to warranty their install work; based on someone else machine work.
So i guess you should just right that check to Robinson for $12k; if those are your requirements.

I believe only a very rich masochist would buy a new LR OE engine directly. Only someone with shares in LR would recommend buying one as well. There must be plenty of good quality remans in the US or similar alternatives. If it was a warranty replacement and you weren't paying for it - yeah, go for it but don't lay out your own hard cash as the D2 won't be worth a penny more when you sell it, you'll never get your money back..
