Default New to us 2004 Land Rover Discovery SE with engine tick/tap

Hello all,
We have recently purchased a 2004 Discovery SE with 64k miles. This car had two owners previously and had good documentation and had been well cared for. We purchased it from a luxury used car lot that specializes in foreign cars.

They had done a lot of work to the vehicle including new plug wires, lifters, head gaskets, cooling system hose swap, tires, breaks, rotors along with a full 60k service. They also claimed to have performed a block pressure test while everything was torn down which it passed.

Anyway, we have noticed that at warm idle we have a pronounced tick/tap that sounds louder from the bottom of the engine. I have read that a tick/tap is somewhat normal for this vehicle but wanted to get a second opinion.

Here is a video of the sound:

I also noticed that we have an oil leak that appears to be coming from the gasket on the front of the oil pan. We have a 60 day warranty so I can get that taken care of. The dealer claims that the tick/tap is normal and there is nothing wrong. It does drive very nicely, smooth shifts and smooth engine acceleration.

A tick like that is NEVER normal. It may be COMMON, and not always a huge deal on these engines, but it's not that way it is supposed to be. I'd look for an exhaust leak first.

X2 what jafir said. If you bought it at a premium used car lot you probably paid a premium price. You shouldn't have to put up with that noise. The statement that it's a normal noise is BS. If they made that noise new, LR would never have sold any of them, who would buy it? (maybe a deaf person)

Sounds like you have yourself a nice Disco. Honestly my Disco sounds exactly like that. Its very common and should be investigated. It may not be a big deal but there is a chance that your engine needs to be serviced... again most of us have some form of a tick and some are worse than others. Just keep up with the oil changes and use premium fuel and you should be good to go for now. Good luck and welcome to the forum.

My '04 makes that sound too. I was planning on dropping the oil pan to see if the oil pickup was loose. Has anyone ever actually resolved this sound?

Yes some members on here have claimed to resolve their engine tick problems, but the issue is that whats making your engine tick might be different from whats making another persons engine tick. One fix will not fix all engine tick issues. So many things can cause the tick in these engines. Its potentially a pain in the *** to pin point without spending $$$$, but not hopeless either.

Take it back and have them look for a crack in the fly wheel.

If it was mine I would take it back, thats a pretty hard tap and I would guess a loose liner. Mine has ticked for the last two years and 20k plus miles without really getting any worse but,I sure wouldnt have bought it if it was doing it at time of purchase.

Did the dealer tell you what weight oil they put in it? Synthetic or not?

Mine sounds exactly the same. I change my oil every 3000 miles. Been using RotellaT 15w40 since i've owned it (about 15k miles).
I have done a flush twice, and added different snake oils, to no avail. This time (i changed yesterday). I did a flush (ironically the noise goes away with the flush stuff in there), filled and replace one qt with MMO. Ticking like normal. Drives me insane!!
