I am a potential 1st time Land Rover owner. I have a chance to get a used 2002 Range Rover - black w/black with around 27K miles on it. I don't put a ton of miles on a car each year, so I am looking to have a fun vehicle for my short commute.

Who manufactured the 2002 RR engine? Is it something that will be very costly to repair when/if problems occur?

I am also considering a 2004 Discovery II SE7 or possibly a 2005 LR3. The RR and Disco are close in price range, but the new LR3 will be a lot more.

As this being my first LR purchase, does anyone urge me NOT to go for the 2002 RR? Does anyone highly recommend the Discovery?

Any thoughts would help.

How many miles does the 04 Discovery have? I just recently purchased a 2004 Land Rover Discovery with 2,900miles on it for $30,000 out the door. I am extremly happy with it, and knowing it will be under warrenty for a while is good peace of mind. Are you buying from a dealer? If so check out how much it would cost to get an extended warrenty on either vehicle.

 

02' & 04' have basically the same aluminum Buick based engine. LR3 V-8 is a Jag/Ford engine. LR3 V-6 is a modified Ford Explorer engine.

 

The Rover V8 engine is virtually bullet proof provided you change oil and filters as required, engine sensors can go wrong but that's not a big expense once diagnosed. Its the rest of the car I'd be more concerned about particularly the electrics and air suspension which is expensive if it goes wrong. The discovery is the far superior handling vehicle I've driven both RR and Disco the RR frankly wanders all over the place, take them both down a back road and see what you think. RR is perhaps slightly more comfortable. Some of my friends have Japanese vehicles I would say they are probably more reliable but dont like them myself - good luck they are both nice cars to drive and do the business in the snow and ice.

 

well the p38 range rover and discovery series 2 share many parts mostly frame ,trans,and axles
1. The range rover cost more the discovery cost less
2. The range rover is not as tall as a discovery more head room
3. The range rover has one sunroof the discovery has two if fully loaded
4. The range rover spare is under the carpet the discovery spare is on the back door easier access
5. The range rover is mostly bought as a status symbol The discovery is also bought by some for the same reason but can be a killer rock crawler.
6. The range rover is very rugged however it's not everyday you see a 70K vehicle off road.
7. There are more aftermarket parts for the discovery than range rover unless you buy a classic range rover.
8. The range rover is slightly heavier more gas consumption.
9. The discovery looks more utililatarian The range rover does too with a more luxury feel.
