Default New Engine!

WOOT. Double WOOT.

I'm back from Colorado, and my brand new 4.6L engine from Atlantic British is PURRING like a kitten. I didn't know a Disco could idle so quietly!

I'm going to drive for a couple hours around back roads, keeping the revs inconstant, and then I'll change the oil tonight.

What else can I do to give my baby a good start?

THANKS gentlemen!

Pat

Shoot, it was muddier'n hell when I dropped it off a couple weeks ago... I just got it cleaned today! And it'll stay that way until our driveway and road turn to mud again...

You have a very nice looking rig. One thing that comes to mind on how you might extend the service life would be to switch over to synthetic oil at some point, especially since you are starting out with a new motor. Use good quality oil filters, not just the ones that have the prettiest looking paint. I hear a lot of guys say to use high-octane gas to keep the motor from getting gummed up inside. And the obvious one is to use a good quality air filter (Fram/Wix). Did you have your injectors checked prior to installing the engine? When I've had that done during engine work, I usually get one or two that have a poor spray pattern. Getting them cleaned/fixed/replaced could provide better economy and performance. It doesn't cost that much to have then flow tested. Enjoy..

Thanks so much for the tips, Mark!

Man, I wish I would have had my injectors tested... Do you know if it's a lot of work to pull them to test? Probably not worth it now, seeings how it's running fine and all.

I'm definitely using very good oil, filter, and air filter- so I'm glad we're on the same page there.

Thanks again- if you think of anything else, let me know!

Pat

Run a can of BG 44K through the Gas Tank... it will clean the injectors like a champ.

That's a good start, but several things can affect injector performance and spray, and a 'miracle in a can' won't solve many of them. Pat, I wasn't intending to frighten you about the injector talk. It's just one of those things that is a good idea to have checked on an older, higher mile vehicle. Yours are probably fine. It's one of those things where there can be one or two 'weak' ones and not hardly know it other than reduced power. Especially on a V8. I haven't removed L/R injectors. Usually with most vehicles there is a clip or a hold-down mechanism that you remove and pull them out (usually have to remove or move the fuel rail first). At this point, I wouldn't bother with them. Regardless, it won't increase the longevity of your Disco.

I remember one car I owned and pulled the heads off (gasket failure) a few years ago. Upon first test, the flow was all over the place (it was a V6). After cleaning, two were erratic the rest were fine. I replaced the two. I witnessed it at the machine shop. It was one of those things that must have been that way for a while and I never noticed it. The Check Engine Light never went off. I also had the heads re-done. There was a moderate boost in power afterwards and the engine ran smoother than ever. It's one of those things that isn't a bad thing to check. Certainly not something to get worked up over unless you notice any issues.

Glad you are enjoying your rig..

Very nice looking rig, did your original one blow or did you just want the bigger motor?

Nah Danny, it had the 4.6 in it already. My block developed a crack in the #7 cylinder, so it was either fix it, or part it out.

Since it's like new in every other area, I decided to fix it.
