I've got an 02 kalahari. 140k, cracked cylinder head! Should I replace with an original 4.0 or try going tdi? I'm in Oregon love this truck and need some advice...

advice throw a used cylinder head on it for $25.00 and continue to drive it, no need to jump in ***** deep just because you cracked a head

did not see that you found a problem with the block.

You can do a top hat liner conversion on your existing block which would seal the crack. I'm not a huge fan of using cracked blocks, but it would be cheaper than getting a new/used block.

Sorry you took it that way; I meant no offense. To try to understand how the cracked block occurred, to compare to the numerous other similar cases, I was asking a simple question as to if he could shed any light on how the cracked block happened, so others can possible avoid such a thing in the future. Dane, you seem awfully stressed to attack me for asking for a little information as to how this happened?

 

Its annoying when someone asks a question and get more questions in return, just answer his question. I know you might be trying to do good, but word it differently, don't talk to anyone the same way as you would to a child. You do have a history for being a dick also, so I call it as I see it. Disco Mike must've really rubbed off on you didn't he while he was around, you better just tell this guy its his driveshaft, give him your phone number, pat yourself on the back, and call it a day.

People ask for advice requiring follow-on info all the time.

"Should I buy a Discovery?"
"My CEL is on...what's wrong?"
"Block is shot...what engine upgrade should I consider?"

Often the answer is "It depends", followed by a few relevant, pointed questions, which should not be discouraged. The great thing about forums is this doesn't need to slow you down from making replies should you feel you have all the info needed. And folks like Mike who hand out their # for 7 days/week free assistance have my undying gratitude! Don't think that smiley emotocon covers whatever chip is on your shoulder.

I've been a member here since 2006 and DiscoMike has offered his time and expertise to me on numerous occasions. He has patiently walked me through diagnosis after diagnosis and whenever (rarely) he wasn't 100% correct, I would always call him back and let him know what the eventual problem turned out to be in order to further his knowledge, just like he was trying to further mine.

Internet forums like this are designed for that very purpose, and when used correctly, by respectful people, a special sense of community gets formed where people help people...

Asking questions helps someone, who is genuinely interested in trying to help, better understand the situation before offering advice on how to diagnose or fix the problem.

I serve as a moderator on three different motorcycle forums and spend time trying to prevent asshats from running off long-term members who have been valuable contributors to the knowledge base of the community because they are tired of new members ragging on them for asking questions out of a genuine interest to provide help, as opposed to just posting "the answer" which may or may not apply if they don't fully understand the circumstances that created the issue in the first place.

I have no idea what happened with DiscoMike and the fact that he doesn't post here any more, but if a bunch of people, who have only been members here since... say November of 2013, were blowing him continued **** about asking questions, you can't really blame him for preferring to talk one-on-one on the phone with someone who is seeking help, and would genuinely appreciate it, so he didn't have to read a bunch of garbage from inconsiderate asshats...

This is the third or fourth time in the last week that someone has been called out for innocently trying to help. Myself included.

I agree with TripleThreat that forums are for everyone to learn.

There is a value to asking questions and also a value to getting to the REAL issues.

How many times have we all seen someone whose been told they "need a new engine" have a fairly common simple problem and do not actually need a new engine...

Countless times.

But if you guys prefer it the other way, Where only the pre defined experts or Rover Master Technicians can answer direct questions and not ask the backstory, so be it.

The only issue I ever had with that was no one would ever close out the posts they just ended with call me. Now I know whenever I talked with Mike he always asked me to go back and finish out the post but most people did not.

 

Agreed - I always try to post a resolution to any question I post here to be able close the loop for people reading...

My opinion is that closing out the post with the actual resolution is the responsibility of the OP. Otherwise, readers will never know if the suggested solution actually solved the problem...
