Angry Is it New Engine Time?

Well, I replaced my rod bearings a couple of weeks ago, and the tapping sound has returned. I know that it is the rear main bearing, I saw a tiny piece of metal sticking out of the bearing cap against the crank shaft. I chose to leave it be, I did not want to remove that cap. With that being said, I have a couple of questions:

1. How long can an engine go like this, the sound is barely audible.
2. What is the best route for me to go, re-manufactured or rebuild (not worth new)
3. What will happen as the bearing gives out?
4. Should I sell now since it sounds great?

I just think I have a real delima, I do love it, but how much money is it going to take to get the engine right? How strong or the tranny's on these things, can I expect a rebuild on that too?

You can drive it like that until it dies, could be tommorrow could be in 10 years.
A re-man and a re-built are the same thing.
When that bearing gives out the engine will be junk.
If you sell it you must disclose what is wrong unless you are one of those people, and your not one of those people are you?
Just call around to engine shops and see how much they want to rebuilt your engine, only takes a couple of days and it will be good as new.
As for the trans, it will last forever as long as you take care of it.

Yes im one of those people. Joking, but I have a better chance of getting more money now than letting it progress. I figured reman is when all clearances are redone and checked, and everything is reground. Rebuilt, I figure all new bearings, new seals and rings, but nothing reground unless scoring has occurred. And as far as the transmission, the same was said about the engine, but apparently its not how I take care of it, it is how the previous owner took care of it.....

Yes it is how the previous owner took care of it, just like any machine.
If you sell it then you must disclose what is wrong which will lower your price.
Your pissed at the previous owner, do you want somebody being mad at you?
Personally I would just drive it, when it gets really bad then fix it.
As long as you take care of it who knows how long it will last, in the mean time look for a used engine or a totalled truck that you can buy and part out.
www.autosportsunlimited.com sells used engines.
I guy I know bought one from them for $500.
He bought a DII with a blown engine, the womans sons ran it out of oil and blew the engine.

I watch TBS and HBO.
Seriously though, there are plenty of people out there who have no problems screwing somebody else over.
I am not one of those people and I dont like those people.
Glad you were joking, and yes I can take a joke.

I thought I was due for a new block...I contacted a friend of mine who is huge into TR6's and other British vehicles, he recommended a machine shop. I checked with them and they had problems sourcing the rebuild kits for the Disco II. I was quoted 4-$5000 + parts.
Which is cheaper than buying a remanufactured from a rover parts shop, but it's still pretty damn pricey.

I'm a little apprehensive about buying a used motor that came out of a wreck or something and spending all the time to yank the old motor out and put another motor in. If I am going to go throught the trouble on a vehicle like this, I'm going to put in a fresh engine...not something with questionable origins.

If we were talking about a old chevy motor...I've had those ripped out of cars in less than 2 hours from start to finish...I would expect a swap in a Disco to take much, much, much longer than that.

Default Is it New Engine Time

I have an 04, DII with 55K miles.

I was driving along today and came to a red light and the engine died. It started again after about 30-45 seconds. This then again happened about 5 hours later. I have about 3/4 of a tank of gas. Could it be bad gas? Any ideas are greatly welcomed. let me know if any other information is needed.

Thanks.

Youll get better luck if you start a new thread.
But if you have the V8 it sound like it is the crank position sensor.
Pretty common on DII's for these to go bad, when it gets hot it shuts the engine off, once it cools then the engine starts and runs again.
I would just wait and see if it happens again and take note of under what circumstance it happens.
Been driving for a hour, and check engine light on, how long it has to sit before starting again, etc.
