Default New to the forum...

Hello Guys(and gals) My name is Tom and I am new to the forum here. The reason I posted in the Discovery forum is because this where I am pretty sure I will spend most of my time. I have been lookingfor a month or so fora new vehicle and have decided to make my garages' day by giving it a 95+ Discovery. Its great that this place exists. I was really concerned about buying one at first but now that I know theres a community here for these I am going to take the plunge. Craigslist seems to have a TON of reasonably priced Discos(I hope I can use that word here being a noob and all), and I will be looking here in the classifieds too. I will be reading up on what to look for when buying one and such but if anyone here wants to throw out a few pointers here or there I would greatly appreciate it. In return I am a former Car audio/Video/Home Theater installer. I don't do that for a living anymore but its still a hobby so if I can help in that department please let me know.

Welcome to our little forum. You will find lots of Land Rovers for sale with the price of gas being so high, and just in case you didnt know, you MUST use premium gas.
Dont be afraid to low ball somebody, most people are desperate and are willing to take a loss on their trk right now.
I have a '97 with 173,000 miles on it.
In my opinion DI's are better than DII's, but the guys with DII's think that they are better than DI's. So either way you will love your trk.
Do a search on here for gas, oil, ABS, overheat, cruise, check engine light.
If you are looking for a DI ('94-'99.5) 90% of the check engine lights being on are due to bad spark plugs and wires. 90% of cruise controls not working are due to vacum leaks. And 90% of ABS lights being on are do to bad wheel speed sensors.
I probally gave you more infor than you were looking for right now, that is one of my downfalls, I like to hear myself talk.
Goodluck in your search.

Spike...Thanks for all the info. All that will help while out looking for a Disco. I will do those searches and continue to read and learn. The good thing about the prices being reasonable now is that now there will be more people able to get into one of these and enjoy them. I have always liked the look of all the Land Rover but the Disco has appealed to me the most. Its very different and I like that. I am a car and truck nut thru and thru so I know I will like it here. While I am NOT capable of tearing a motor down to the block(lacking the correct tools and knowledge) I can trace and repair basic problems and enjoy the challenge that goes with that. I can also perform maintnance as well. I have always really enjoyed exploring dirt roads...as I drive by one...thinking...hmmm...I wonder where THAT goes?? As you can tell I like to hear myself talk too so before I get too sidetracked I will go back to reading some posts. I will keep you guys postedas far as my hunt for a Disco goes. Wish me luck

Good luck!! This is an awesome board for sure. Another thing you may want to test when looking at D1's is if the CDL will engage. Sometimes it's never been used by the PO so the linkage "freezes" in place. Engaging the CDL is left (locked) and right (unlocked). Low and high are forward and back respectively. Some people also advise to expect to put an extra $1000-$2000 after the purchase to fix and issues. Once you iron out the kinks and workaround the quirks you'll really love your truck.

You should also consider getting the RAVE manual. Someone here, I think "unstable" has a link to it in his signature.

Oh yeah, if you have/rent an OBDII scanner you can come here to figure out what the codes mean before you purchase.

Time will tell. Quick question... if I find a Disco that has had regular non-premium fuel in it should I stay away?

No, that just means that it will need a little more TLC after you buy it.
And I forgot to mention that in order to be a part of this forum that you must watch the movie The Gods Must be Crazy, you will get to see the love-hate relationship that you will have with a LR. Your trk will run forever and you can fix it in the bush but man will it ever **** you off with all of its little quircks.
It is On Demand with Comcast right now, otherwise rent it, it is a MUST.
