New guy needs help
First off, hello to everyone! I've been lurking around for a while and finally decided to post. I just recently bought a 2001 DII after looking at them for some months. I'm having a little trouble with it. (unheard of right
) Won't start. PO told me the crank sensor was bad. It started when I went to check it out, ran fine for about 15 minutes and died. Got it home, tried for a week to test things and it looked like the crank sensor was bad. Tested it for AC signal and had none and no spark.Replaced the sensor, started and ran for about 15 minutes and died. tried carb cleaner down the intake, nothing. Checked for spark and nothing. I can put a test light in a plug wire, ground it and it lights when I crank it over. It is an LED light so it only takes a few volts. If I put something metal in the wire and try to test I get no spark to metal. Does this sound like a bad coil? I've worked on cars for a long time, even at a dealer. But I cant find anything online about these things to specify which wire on the plug to the coil should get what signal and when to fire. Looks like the coils are just barely firing. Swapped a fuel pump too to no avail. I've searched and searched. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Are you getting any codes? Do you have an OBDII reader? If you just got the truck doing a complete tune up with a new MAF would be a good idea. Use a Bosch, and there are some thread on it. Do Plugs, wires, etc. A bad crank sensor will not let it start. So I suspect ignition. I just put in Standard Motor Products coilpacks, kingsborne 8mm wires and NGK Iridium plugs, and they all get high marks in my book. I also wonder if a bad throttle position sensor would do this.
Coilpacks are a pain, but there is a relocation kit online.
If you have not done it yet inspect the driveshafts u joints, and get one that is serviceable if it is not. Put in a new thermostat unless you’ve seen a receipt that says it is new.

I had a similar situation arise about 6 months ago on my 03. It would start then it wouldn't. No spark. I did the usual CPS check blah blah. In the end I took of the passenger kick panel and wiggled the wires connected to the ecu. Bingo
Thanks for the replies guys. The truck has had heads done, front driveshaft has been rebuilt, plugs and wires done, and crank sensor I also unplugged the connectors to the ecm and checked for corrosion and all that good stuff And replaced the fuel pump.
See if you can get a good used MAF and try that. Maybe swap the Fuel pump relay with another and see if that makes any difference.
The MAF provides feedback to the ECU and Engine Management system, so all I could say is maybe. Some people clean them, I don't, but you could try. If the MAF fails I believe the motor bypass, but I don't know exactly how the programming works. I am just saying try it, because it sounds like a sensor issue. Maybe the Throttle Position sensor is bad as well.
If you could find one to swap in, you could eliminate it. Same with the TPS.
