Red face Engine Rebuild 2001 Disco II 4.0

Shout out to LR country. I am a greenhorn with Land Rovers. Six years ago, drove with a friend to Oregon for this one. He asked me what I thought at the time. I said, nice vehicle.don't buy it! It had an unknown DTC. You guessed it, he bought it. Overheated on the way back to California (frequently on the return trip), imagine that. Turns out, the dtc was a misfire. Also, coolant loss, without the white smoke. We decided to add high end engine/leak sealer. Then 5 years later, 20,000 miles, about August 2017, it started overheating/misfiring again. More sealant didn't help. High pressure in cooling system causing it to overheat within 4-7 minutes (downhill). Also, coolant would blow out the overflow tube like it was high pressure. My friend wanted to do just the head gaskets (but was concerned about liners), and I said ' I will remove and disassemble it. I hated the gruelling task of removing the 14 bell housing bolts! Turns out, the crank, mains, rod bearings were all scored.

Machine shop did the process for installing top hat liners ( I've come this far, might as well), decked the block, installed new cam brgs, brass freeze plugs. Crank ground 10 over. About to install the crank, to plastigauge it and the rod bearings. The machine shop said the heads don't need shaving.

I have a question at this stage. Do Land Rover Disco II heads ever crack, so that, exhaust gases could enter the cooling system? Thanks in advance for all responses. The story will continue...............

Never really heard of the heads cracking. Not to say it doesn't happen, but there are more issues with the block. Did you test the coolant for exhaust?

Over pressure could very well be caused by over heating. Some of that stop leak could have broken loose and clogged up the radiator or the thermostat. Those should be replaced at the same time and I would not recommend using the stop leak again on a vehicle you care about.

The block is what is known to crack, never heard about the heads cracking. Your top hat liners, assuming they have top and bottom O rings should null the block cracking in a perfect world.

Alex_M.......In my life I have never seen a cooling system generate so much bubbling, blowing pressure out of a coolant tank overflow tube even when the particlular vehicle was overheating. Before install, I will also test radiator.

Tried to install crank.....the middle thrust washer bearing is too big. Crank will drop in with the other mains in place, but , not the thrust. *sigh* (never happened to me before).

I'm also wondering how if the oil pump housing is slightly scarred, if this will affect oil pressure even with new pump gears.
The better news is that I bought a ST1300 motorcycle and can ease my worries anytime.......lol.
