Default New key or keyless and remote start?

I have a Disco II my keyless entry on my key does not work, to order and program a new key the dealer wants $300. Best buy will install a keyless entry and a remote start for $320.

What to do?

Thanks,

What will happen to the factory alarm? can you remove it? If yes, the remote start would be a real good deal.

When I purchased my 01 Discovery it did not come with a key remote.
I bought a new key on eBay and had the dealership program it for $65, all totaled was about $180 for key and programming.
I learned the hard way to to buy used key remotes without the tag with the codes on it. Used remotes seem like a good deal but from my experience they cannot be reprogrammed unless the bar codes are available... If you search eBay make sure they come with the "white bar code tags" on them.

A few there now for about $150.
I have a brand new one that I never programmed....
Was thinking about having an extra remote but have not done any with it yet.

Do not install an after market system to a Rover, it is usually always a nightmare.
Watch E-Bay for a new FOB with bar codes, then find a local shop that has the correct scanner that program it, may be done in total for $150 plus.

DO you have a spare key or two yet?
If not get a couple made.

IlcoRV4 is what you need, then you can worry about the remote later, this way you will at least have a key or two if yours gets lost or stolen.

If a remote start with keyless entry is installed correctly it will work.

Thank you all for the info. I have extra keys made, I will follow mike's advise and try to find a fob with code on ebay.
