Default New member: hello and question about towing with my Disco

Hello,

Enjoying a 2001 Disco 2 with 282k km. I’ve had the truck for four years. Everything works flawlessly with no leaks. (Really!). Just spent an enjoyable Saturday replacing the O2 sensors after one went bad. Basic maintenance is satisfying to accomplish. This is the favourite vehicle I’ve had as it makes every excursion feel like an epic adventure.

Have every service record from new thanks In large part to previous owner. Original engine with head gasket done at 70k km and regular maintenance never missed.
I’ve set the Disco up to tow a recently purchased travel trailer that has GVWR 3000 lbs and comes with electric brakes. Interested in opinions on viability of this idea from forum members. Well within the 5500 lb factory rating but actual experiences? Thank- you!

Cabin life, November.

Hi and welcome - I think braking is the only concern. Disco brakes seem ok but I am not sure with a trailer, my assumption would be if your brakes work well it should not be an issue. I am sure some one will chime in who hauls a trailer around

I tow a boat in what I guess to be about 3-3500 lbs. I can definitely tell it's behind me and do need more room to brake, although 100% manageable. Also given that I am in Florida and have never dealt with any sort of incline besides a bridge going over i95. I also don't have electric brakes on my trailer and have never dealt with them either so that might make up for the possible poor hill performance. Only bad experience I have had is cruising on the highway with the trailer, I never run temperatures over like 194 max I think, but going over 70mph shoots my temperature to 206-210. Still within limits but being that I never see temperatures above 194 is what a little discomforting the first time.

65mph on cruise control seems to be the most efficient with and without the trailer both in terms of engine temp and gas mileage

I also recently pulled a 5000lb car on a full uhaul car trailer, id assume the trailer weighed over 500 but I don't know for sure. Got on the highway and off the highway in a major down poor doing 65mph. Felt a little bit heavier then the boat but not by much. No issues running in high range and braking.

I think you'll be fine given you have the electronic braking, just make sure you get it rigged up right
