Default New Member - Hi. Few Questions

Hi,

I'd like to introduce myself to your forum. I'm thinking about getting a LR Disco I or II. They are so inexpensive and capable! I understand they are not necessarily reliable though.

I'm a BMW guy that is going to get the LR, sell my E39 530i, and wait for the right E46 M3 to go side by side with the LR. The LR won't be my daily driver, but a second car to take to the desert, beach, mountains, etc, tow a race car etc. (not the E46, but a Lemons race car)

Without asking too many questions that I get a "search the forums" answer:

I'm sure the LR has adequate power for off roading, but I am concerned about towing a race car, and heading up the mountain to Mammonth. Does the OBDii
motor react well to headers, exhaust?

Would a leak down and cylinder pressure test be the top priority for a pre purchase inspection?

Thanks!

JB

The DI has 182 horse power, the DII 188, so pulling a race car in the mountains will be slow and painful.
If you are familiar with Bosch then a DII may be right for you as that is when BMW owned LR.
Adding headers and a hi flow exhaust will get you mixed results, these are not high performance engines.
Some gain a few mpg by adding a hi flow exhaust, others dont.
You can have the ECU chipped but again, not much help.
They are 4500lb bricks with a underpowered out of date engine, and I wouldn't have it any other way.

They are purpose built, and their purpose is to go slow anywhere in the world.
Low end torque is great, mid range is no good, again, built to climb rocks not go fast pulling a trailer.
The towing capacity is 5500lbs.

Does that help at all?

Thanks. Just to clarify I would not tow a race car up the mountain. Towing would be one trip. Up the mountain for snowboarding another.

Whats the right e46 m3 laguna sega blue yes.You want one of these trucks then be prepared to roll up you sleaves cause there pretty needy,Ive never towed anything with mine but i can tell you mid range torque blows bad and with pulling a car you probley get 7 to 8 mpg.

I don't mind turning wrenches. I am going to build a 24 Hours of Lemons car next year and want something to tow it with to the races. Don't really care too much about the mpg for occasional towing trips.

I towed a 2004 Discovery on a U-Haul car dolly from Atlanta to Indianapolis with a 2003 Discovery. It was a little scary at times, but it will tow! If you have a flat bed trailer back there you wont even know its there. Once you get up to speed its not bad.

I would shop for a used powerstroke turbo diesel if you looking to haul that car around. You cannot go wrong with a good used Ford F250 powerstroke (shop for a 7.3).

Ford Excursion powerstroke diesel is also a good hauler. It sits 7 inside COMFORTABLY as well.

The re-sell on the powerstrokes are amazing also. You will not lose a dime. those engines will clock 400-500k miles all day long.

Just my .02

Hmm... Well If I were you, I'd get a series II... The Disco 1 has MANY problems that if you're not a mechanic.. then you'd be sunk...

I use my 03 to tow my 3000 lb travel trailer. To be honest the engine hauls it fine, and it stops fine, but the trailer itself has brakes. The main downside that I have found with towing is squirelliness due to thebshort wheelbase. When I'm not towing, I take it to the mtns, and have never had an issue. As has been mentioned, just understand what the vehicles capabilities are, and it's awesome....as I keep mentioning to my wife, it can't be driven like her impreza, but that's another story
