New member looking for thoughts on a pair of discos for purchase. But first, might as well share a little about me! Been wrenching on cars for over +2 decades now as a hobby, mostly on European cars (audi / vw). My family had a 01' Disco for a few years and ive always wanted to get another one. There are a few decent Disco's on CL in Denver here but i wanted to run a pair of them by you guys to see what you think.

Both have similar milage near the 160k mark -- I have not contacted either seller yet to find more details but will be this weekend. Both are similarly priced.

04' -- Lifted, aftermarket bumper, winch, stereo and new tires. Good ext / int color combo. Con's for this one is that it needs a new tranny. Found a replacement tranny for $300 and I don't mind wrenching.

00' -- Completely stock but the HG / heads have been replaced. Con's is that it is.. stock and ext / int colors aren't my fav.

From my research, seems the 04' is the "best" Disco 2 they made with the larger engine and other items vs. the 00-03's. Obviously there needs several other questions answered such as service history etc. So, what would you guys pick between these 2 discos given the shared information so far?

Always pick a running driving car over one that doesn't. Spares are plentiful enough that you can change the interior, which is what you hope to see most of the time cause you'll be driving it, as opposed to looking at it in your driveway, waiting on parts.


Upgrade parts are cheap. Do your own build, not someone else's

 

Transmission is a quick easy fix. If I was to get that one I'd let it sit at idle until it fully warms up and listen to how the engine sounds also take an OBDII reader with you to look for pending codes or current codes along with monitoring the engine temps. I take my scangauge II and iCarsoft LR2 with me on any LR I'm looking at.

If the drive shaft is what killed the transmission it could have other things broken, but if it's just a transmission I think the 04 is the better deal and no sun roofs to mess with. The 04 is an S model with vinyl seats btw.

 

Hmm.. The 00' apparently has the P1590 code per the emissions paperwork.

 

If you are serious about having a Disco II get an OBDII Reader and scan the trucks. You can fix what you find, but you'll avoid surprises.

 

Neither show any pics of the frame. That would make me nervous right off the bat.

 

I agree with #2, nice to see another person in COS looking for Disco's, only me and one other on Fort Carson with them, they seem to be a rarity down here. I also agree with CollieRover, get a cheap OBDII scanner and run it on them, did that with mine before I bought it so I knew what I was going into when I bought it.

Already have a scanner so I’m good there. I guess my thinking is that the 00 is probably a smarter buy since the HG / heads have been replaced very recently.

Who knows. If the '04 runs fine, what's the difference? I'd make sure that the Thermostat was new, and that you weren't getting any engine codes or tick when warm. Take a close look around both wiring harnesses, and try to identify what work has been done.

I'd recommend a new Genuine Thermostat either way.
