I 'm a new user to the forum. I have had My Disco II for 2 years now and I find myself constantly referring to the this forum for info so I thought it was time to register and ask a question.

I'm not sure if this is the right place to post a question but I can't figure out how to post anywhere else so I'll give it a shot.

My Disco recently started slipping gears. It gradually got worse so my wife took it to a transmission shop and they ran the codes. They are:

P1591 (Rough road sensor)
and he also got a "trans 5" code???

I have no idea what this means and neither does he. I feel like I need to replace the transmission but I'm not sure, the guy said it's slipping in 1st and 4th.

Anyone know anything about this. Thanks in advance for the info.

 

Download the RAVE shop manual. On page 355 of 1529 in the shop manual you will find info about the rough road signal - low cuircuit. It is unlikely that this is causing your shifting problem, it is not generated by the transmission, it is created by the SLABS system when you are on a rough surface, and the engine computer is advised to suspend misfire monitoring until you are on smoother pathway. Can be associated with other warning lights.

Trans code 5 would be a torque converter lockup clutch fault. Page 616 of same manual.

If shop does not understand the codes, perhaps time for a new shop.

Just to update I took the Rover to the specialist and they discovered it just needed more transmission fluid. They flushed it and filled it to the proper amount, all better.

 

Yep...that's pretty common. When mine was leaking the same thing happened.

 

Nice to hear the transmission shop didn't bother to check the fluid level. Don't ever go back there.

For gawd sake, man, don't you guys check your transmission fluid, especially if transmission is slipping? Did you really think that a Rover will go forever, without your checking anything? You need to be introduced to PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE, AND NO, THAT ISN'T A NEW HAIR SPRAY.

 

A little harsh, don't you think? The D2 has no tranny dipstick and not everyone is into crawling under a running truck to pull a plug out of a pan full of hot fluid. He did take it to a shop, but it looks like they didn't want to do it either!

 

Not a lot of people want to lay on their back with their hands next to 800 degree cats with the chance of several hundred degree oil could land on their arms when they undo the 8mm screw from the tranny.
