Default New Owner!

Hi Everyone
My name's Eugene and I just bought a 1997 Discovery SE7 and loving it. I found the 60k/major service list and it looks like I'm going to be pretty darn busy, but I had a few other questions for the vets.

I have a rattle that sounds like it's coming from under the hood right in front of me, the rattle isn't proportional to the speed, but I only notice it when I get over about 35 mph, and it rattles when I hit bumps. It sounds like something rather heavy (not like an exhaust shield). I've been poking around trying to find loose things, but no luck, does anyone have any ideas for me?

Also, in the course of poking around I've found ALOT of oil coating the underside of the vehicle, the P/O said it leaked/burned oil at a rate of approx 1/2 quart between oil changes, but I'm not sure this accounts for the amount of oil that I saw under the vehicle, this is my first four wheel drive vehicle and I'm not really sure what to check, can someone point me in the right direction?

Thanks in advance for all the help!

engine oil, steering box oil, swivel ball oil, diff oil, take your pick, maybe all thee above. keep an eye on your levels and check for fresh drips on the drive and you'll find it.

Maybe a tie rod , shocks , or front hub for your rattle and how many miles your rig

Default Check the jack.

I vote for the jack being loose or the jack bracket. Nothing serious.
He is not talking about steering issues or vibrations. If not the jack, then something loose but nothing vital. My vote.

The mileage is 135000.
The P/O said that he had recently had the steering and suspension checked, because he was aware of the rattle, and the place he took it seemed to think it was some kind of shift linkage. I also know from experience though that the place he took it to can't tell their heads from their butts...
The rattle isn't the jack either, checked that (jack is currently on the back seat).
I'm having second thoughts on my location guess too, I'm beginning to think it's closer to me than inside the engine bay... moonroof parts maybe? but i cant find anything loose there
