New Owner 2nd Time Around :)
Greetings All,
I've been posting here since Dec last year, and wanted to take a moment to introduce myself.
I’m a long time DIY automotive enthusiast and mostly work on German cars for fun. But a Jeep of one sort or another has been in my “collection” for most of my driving life as a daily driver and towing vehicle. Started with an ’87 XJ, then a few Grand Cherokees, a Wrangler (hand me down from my father) and we still have a ‘94 XJ with 190K miles I built for off-roading that my teenage son drives and tries to destroy daily. Skid plates, front and rear bumpers, winch, headers and exhaust – lots of fun modifications. But it has suffered tremendously from rust issues.
Here the Jeep is about to go "under the knife" for major upgrades. I lost this garage when I sold my last house, and the new owner turned it into a gym (moment of silence please...)

Here I just finished replacing most of the passenger side floor with sheet metal and pop rivets in 2005. It is getting bad again and I’ve done even more repairs in the past few years.

When I got married in 2001, my wife had a 2000 Disco that she loved. I enjoyed the luxury and unique nature of the Disco, but was wary of reliability. It stranded us once from a radiator hose blowout. The Jeeps had never done that.

The last few days of ownership. Babied!

Just look at that headliner

Wish my seats looked like these!
When the warranty ran out I wasn’t eager to start working on it, or having the family stranded - so we sold it and replaced it with a boring but reliable Toyota. I made some cosmetic changes but left it mostly stock. Wife drove most of the time.
When the family got a little smaller, we sold the Toyota and got an X3. Very nice driving “SAV.”

After that a Cayenne Turbo (amazingly cheap when depreciated) was the 4x4 we drove and towed with. Very nice but quite a gas pig for such a modern vehicle. That is price of 450HP I guess J

The Cayenne was sold in 2013 and my wife was relegated driving a “regular car” (BMW convertible). When this winter started to get bad, she was lamenting that she didn’t have anything to get around with in the snow (she works at home so commuting is not an issue). Another concern was we no longer had a "dog car" to shuttle the canine around in. Her favorite off roader has always been the Defender (old or new version). Have you checked the prices on those lately? Ouch! So I started looking casually at the Disco IIs figuring that I would just have to work on one as needed. Before looking long I found one on eBay that looked “OK” and was cheap enough to not get hurt. I put a low offer into AuctionSniper and went on vacation. Forgot all about it until I got the email “Congratulations! You have won a 2001 Land Rover Discovery.” Uh oh! After getting back home I made arrangements to pick it up and surprised my wife with it as an “early Christmas present.” Since this was a “beg forgiveness” instead of “ask permission” purchase it could have gone badly. But no, she was excited and loved it! I had the same interior (although badly worn) as her first Disco. So all was forgiven! And even the dog is happy in back

We had problems right away of course – brake light switch failure on the drive home from picking it up and only one headlight worked. And we are still fighting an occasional set of misfire codes that I’m sure will be solved eventually. But we have gotten around in the bad weather and my wife hasn’t driven the BMW since the Disco arrived!

I have done some simple upgrades with more in the works when weather permits. First big one was a 2” TF lift. And I moved the Safari rack from the Jeep to the Disco

I look forward to more work, upgrades, fixes and general puttering around with the Disco over the next few years.
Thanks in advance to all of you who help me keep this baby running!
Chris

Those are all nice SUVs...driven them all but the DII is hands down my favorite. Being a sports car enthusiast, I thought I'd like the Porsche. Drag raced my DII against a buddies Cayenne on the Hwy and almost won! He was towing a boat though

Towing was very nice. I had the full air suspension and a lot (460 lb-ft) of torque.
