They do not come with lockers from the factory, DII's use traction control.
You will need the center differential lock which was not available on DII's from 2000-2003.
Keep in mind that these trucks are full time four wheel drive and you MUST use premium gas.
You can expect 15mpg as a daily driver.

The Camel Trophy rigs aren't stock.

You are right, they have roll cages and snorkels, otherwise yes, they are 100% stock.
They add safety devices and skid plates, thats it.
Stock suspension, stock engine and trans, t-case, gears...everything is stock.

Also whats a good budget lift kit and whats the largest size tires you can fit on a stock 03' Disco. Does the 18" wheel mean anything besides that its an 18" wheel? Will you not be able to fit a 16" if it came with 18's for some reason (brakes, lines, shields?)

The price and availability of an 03 out weights the 04's by me. Theres 1 04 for 8400$ but its gold and it has 120k on it. Theres 2 03's both private sellers for 8,000$ and they both got 80k miles on them. So if I can just install something to make it like and 04' I would rather do that unless a good one pops up.

Is 120k miles alot for these motors? Where do they start breaking down. I understand its how they are taken care of but for the most parts whats the deal. I dont want to have to do a head gasket or engine swap in the first 3 years.

The only way to make a '03 have a CDL is to either rebuild the transfer case or replace it with a CDL equipped T-case.

You can put 16" rims on a DII with 18"s.
The only problem with the 18"s is the lack of tire choices for off roading and the price of the tires.
They are a low profile tire for mall crawlers and the side walls are to thin for off roading.

'03's have oil pump issues that only a new engine can cure for a 100% fix.

120k is nothing for these trucks, they are pretty much bullet proof, remember, they are sold in every single country of the world in the exact same form as one that you will buy.
The ONLY difference is they are diesels, some are gas, but 90% of the LR's sold in the rest of the world are diesels.

Head gaskets go around the 80k mark, usually once they are replaced they never fail again.
2 things that cause them to fail...
1-DexCool
2-not using premium gas.

In that second video that is a DII, cant tell you the exact year because up until 2003 they all looked the same.
2003 was the first year for the new headlights.

I sure dont want engine issuses.... Is there a good company that sells new/rebuilt engines? I guess Ill look for an 04' and if its got over 80k Ill put a new head gasket on it before I start driving it. If I cant find one for a good price Ill just settle for an 01' and rebuild a T-case with CDL then install it down the road.

What about a D1, 99' 98'? For 3k its hard to pass one up. Think of it like this, for the 5k I saved I can do alot with that 5k to make it more off road capable. Can the headlghts for an 04' fit in a old Disco?

Now that I think about it, forget about the center locking diff if I can just install locking diffs. Are they D44's Im guessing?

4X4's in michigan cost more this time of year cause many people buy vehicles just for winter. Its normal to see something thats a 4X4 suv with a 20% mark up over something in a warmer state. Its been that way for years.

sounds like you're in a rush? if not, be patient, you'll find the right truck.

with the amount of $$ you're talking you should have able to find a truck with 50-60k miles, no matter your locale. and, for a 20% markup, I'd travel somewhere and pick one up. the 04 you pointed out earlier was a great example.

The D1s have a CDL. I'd drive with a CDL before considering locking axles. you'll be surprised.

it would be silly to throw a head gasket in a truck that doesnt need it.

You sound like me. I've got about 60K on mine and I'm going to do the head gasket and rebuild the top-end in the spring. Doesn't need it yet but I'd rather the replacement be on my schedule instead of the rovers.

For the X-fer case, I've got an '03 so no locking diff. I kept checking the self-serve junk yard until I found an '04 and pulled the x-fer case and linkage from it. I had a little over $250 in the case, linkage and all new seals and bearings. Anyway, just the linkage kit from the usual suspects is over the $700 mark, so I got the whole ball of wax for $450 less than just the linkage.

You cannot put lockers into a Disco that does not have the CDL, I dont know why, but everybody who knows about lockers says that it cant be done.

The axles on a Disco are equal in strength to Dana 44's from the factory.

The DI is easier to work on that a DII, parts are cheaper and they have alot less electrical issues.
All DI's come with the CDL and full floating axles, no traction control and suck @ss ABS that is best if you pull the fuse to.

The ONLY thing that needs to be done to a Disco to make it more off road capable is better tires.

Pause the bottom video and then watch the top one, then watch the bottom one.
