FWIW, GVWR is the weight of the vehicle + max passengers + max cargo capacity. The curb weight of a D2 is around 4200lbs. LR3 around 5400lbs.

True story. But they do have to use tires rated for the gross weight, not the curb weight.

Off hand, what they seem to be saying in several places I've looked -- oh, strictly off the record! :-) -- is that the load rating of your tires on each axle should add up to 10-15% *higher* than the GAWR for that end of the vehicle.

On my 2000 DII, that's

2646lbs Front

3793lbs Rear

According to Wikipedia, the 106 tires are good for 2100lbs, and the 109s, for 2300lbs.

So, with the 106 tires, which are the factory size, I have 4200lbs of available load capacity to 100% on each axle.

Clearly, that's way more than enough up front -- which is good, since front tires take the lions' share of the bashing in driving, and need the extra -- but in the back, I still have 407lbs of slack (above the GAWR) before I hit the limit, which is 10.7%.

And, as several sources point out, that's the maximum safe continuous load rating, the burst rating is between 150 and 200% of that.

So, properly installed, inflated, and maintained, it does seem likely that the 106 Michelins are suitable for my DII, especially since I'm not all that likely to load it to GAWRs, anyway.

[ This is not legal advice; if anything breaks, you get to keep both pieces. ]

At least, that was what the fine folks at Kaufmann Tire told me.

Of course, they also told me that $824 included Road Hazard Protection (which, for me, for 3 decades, and 6 or 7 sets of tires, has meant *un-prorated* replacement on unrepairable tires) -- and no, it's only unprorated if you pay another $BIGNUM per tire ($18, I think, at my tire price)... at which point, Tire Kingdom was cheaper anyway.

Last time Kaufmann gets my recommendation; I don't enjoy being misled on industry terms of art. ("Yeah; that includes Road Hazard...")

Anyroad, the tires mounted ok, but I have at least 3 lug nuts I need to replace now.

Can anyone speak to these?

They are not the right design for the DII wheels. Here is what the factory ones look like: Lug Nut (ANR3679OE Same Fit As Part # ANR3679) - Land Rover wheel accessories from Atlantic British

Nitto tires are great for our D2's also... I'm using the terra grapplers on my ride. I believe I bought them from Discount Tire and they were shipped to me. A local tire shop mounted and balanced them for $60.

For your lug nuts, try the classified section on here. I got a set of 5 for pretty cheap from a guy that had extras. They are used, but in good condition.

I believe the spare tire lug nuts are different. I know that the cover is different, it has a nipple on the end. I think it is there to allow for the longer stud on the spare tire carrier.

A heads up on the Hankook's...

They're now $134 ea. at Discount Tire Direct, and at this other site I came across has them for $129 ea. Hankook 1008665 P255/65R16 106T

Both sites offer free shipping, and I think Hankook has a $40 mail in rebate for buying a set of 4.

If you're looking for a competent AT tire in the stock 16" size for a ridiculous price, you really can't go wrong here.

Hey, acamoto: When your rear suspension is on the bumpstops, do your tires rub in the wheel wells?

I am putting a 2 inch terrafirrma lift on my D2 this week with SLS spacers. I plan on going with 265 65 18 tires. Seems when the truck is lifted off the ground and supported by the frame, the air bags deflate...not sure if this is supposed to happen. But when it does this, after moving the truck a short distance the system pumps right back up. I just don't want to get the truck to the tire shop after putting the lift on and have issues after they install the larger tires.

Thanks, David
