Default Newbie Question...

I'm looking for cheap car to drive back and forth to work and have really liked the look of the Discovery for a long time. I was wondering if there were certain things to look for when purchasing a 2000 D II. Do all series II have the air suspension? I know these can be quite problematic and expensive to repair, so I would rather not even have it if that's possible.

Thanks,

Scott

If you are looking for a cheap car to drive back and forth to work...a Land Rover is not for you.
Buy a used Camry or Accord.
With that being said, no not all D2's have air suspention and yes it is problematic. Around 100K it fails and can be expensive to fix, but if you replace it with the spring replacement kit then no more problems.
Head gaskets tend to go bad and leak around 80k, I think that it is because of the DexCool, but others believe it is because of poor quality.
You MUST use premium gas and you will get anywhere from 15-20 mpg on the highway.
If you are looking for something that all you have to do is put gas in and change the oil a couple times of year, then get a Honda or Toyota.
These trks have personality, they require lots of love and as long as you tell her that she doesnt look fat and that you still love her even when she is acting up then she will not let you down and will take you anywhere you could ever want to go.

If you like disco's you can find a good deal on them if you search. But like spike said you HAVE to use premium and the up-keep is expensive at times, especially in the first few months of ownership. If you take care of it, the truck will be great to have, I even consider mine reliable. I have a 2000 DII and it took a month to rehab it and since then its been flawless. The air suspension is a hit or miss kind of thing, you might have it, it might break its just one of those things.

I know what you mean by liking the looks, its a great truck inside and out. But it has a personality and sometimes it will act up. I wouldnt recommend any other car, as long as you are willing to take care of it. Honda and Toyota might be "reliable" but my gosh, they are BORING and no company to compare to the "Land Rover Lifestyle". If you want to be unique go rover, if you want to blend in, go Toyota (but i would hate to steer someone in that direction ).
