Default Newbie Question - my apologies

I just bought my first Discovery (2004 Disco II SE) and the first thing I need to do is put new tires on it! It is stock suspension and running 18 inch rims. I know the first choice is to go to 16's - which I will do this summer with some Steelies and aggressive off road tire - but I am looking to had as much sidewall as possible without a lift on 18's. Can I put a 265/65/r18 on the truck? Not too many tire choices available - so any help greatly appreciated!

Jeff

Yes they will fit, and will give a little extra lift under the diffs and may "just" rub on full steering lock. They are 31.5"s as opposed to the standards which are 29".

255/65 18 would be ok to with no issues at all.

And I would HIGHLY recommend General grabber AT2's btw

If your wheels are both 18" and factory stock, you *may* have Active Cornering Enhancement.

No one's ever officially told me this, but I've always assumed that option came with 18" lower profile tires because they needed to reduce sidewall flex to make ACE work sufficiently well to be work the $3000 extra they charge for it.

If you have ACE, you may not want to go to taller tires, and I have only enough knowledge to post the caution, not enough to actually tell you whether it's a bad idea.

the only reason they are a lower profile on the 18" rims is to keep the rolling radius the same, nothing to do with the ACE at all. If they fitted bigger tyres etc on the 18" rims, they would have to fit different speedos etc to compensate for the overall size.

It is the "normal" routine to lower the profile when fitting bigger wheels to retain the overall diameter, thats all its about. The 16" wheels have a 65 profile with ACE from the factory.

The ACE system will just compensate for anything with regard to the suspension as its based on the acceleromters detecting the body movement.

First of all thanks!!!

I am also investigating adding the OME standard duty Shocks and Springs which states adds approx 1.5" of clearance. If I do this I assume that 265/65/r18's would definitely be ok?

Also, do you guys like the OME shocks/springs or is there something else i should consider?

Panzer: I'm familiar with +1 and +2 fitment, yes.

But that doesn't speak to why 18" tires were *mandatory* with ACE. That you *could not get 16" wheels* with ACE certainly suggests strongly that they had a reason...
