Default No power to OBDII reader

My son in law just picked up a 2001 D2, and he brought it right over, the check engine light came on while on the trip from the seller, but we went to read the code(s) with both my Foxwell NT510 and a cheap Bosch one I have,no power at all to the reader. I haven't tried the multimeter yet, I'm hoping a pin is bent or something.

The truck had just passed emissions in AZ, so the port worked at some point recently.

Is that circuit fused or something? Any ideas on where to start?

Thanks in advance,

Jeff

Of course. I have been using OBDII and other diagnostic readers for years, And my Foxwell and Bosch work on my truck, just not this new one, it is a problem with his truck.

@Crusader_22 You would be surprised how often that is the problem, I intended no discourtesy.

But no power at the ODB is a unusual fault.

This thread will direct you to a few possible causes and locations to check ODB port Dead

90% of the time when I can't connect to a vehicle at the shop it's because of a blown fuse. Chevy trucks of certain years are notorious for this because the OBD port is on the same circuit as the cigar lighter. People try charging their phones off it and it blows, but instead of fixing it people just leave it like that.

As for the disco in particular, might be best to check all fuses along with wiring diagrams and see if you can troubleshoot the issue down to a particular location. The fuse boxes themselves are known for corroding and going bad in these vehicles, could also be a cause.

Some types of scanners can get power from a source other than the port itself, so if you really need to scan it and can't find the power issue you can always try that.
