Default Disco I can't read codes.

Guys,
My trusted code reader is all locked away at the movers.

Our venerable Discovery I with almost 170,000 miles threw a code.
Check engine light is on.
Wife is blowing a gasket.

I went to Autozone and got an Actron CP9550 from Autozone.

Plugged that into the OBD-II on the 1997 Discovery I. The scanner
uses the power from the OBD-II connector and would not power up even.

I then took the Actron to the 2001 Discovery II and plugged it in to that
to see if the scanner even worked at all.
YES - it worked!

But, not on our Discovery I.
Apparently the OBDII interface is DIFFERENT from the 2001 to the 1997.

Need to pull that code out and fix.
Wife will not drive it at all with a check engine light on.

Of course now I hear that I need to buy a new car again. This happens every time a check engine light comes on.

Well, 1t 170,000 our Disco I is getting long in the tooth.

Ultrascanners are SOLD out.

Well, so I tried then to HACK power into the Actron on the Discovery I.
I got a little piece of thin solder and put it at Pin 16 - the power PIN on the OBDII connector.

I fished the other end into an iphone charger on the pins..
And, the code scanner lit up! Started to read the Discovery I.
But, could not pull the codes.
So I give up for now.

Wish I could blink the check engine light like the OLD GM cars.

I have this one and it reads the codes in my wife's '97 without a problem.

I don't think that your Actron scanner is made now..

Actron®

Cool that it works on the 1997 Discovery I

Go by another parts store and let them read the codes. My 97 reads out codes to an Actron, which also fits an 06 Kia and anything else that is OBDII compliant.
