I should have read this post regarding how to adjust the door tighter to the seal before I fixed the leak on my barn door. I ended up going to the local parts store and purchased some self stick rubber window gasket material and applied it to the door. The gasket runs all the way across the top and about half way down the side of each door. No longer leaks when it rains or at the car wash either.

My rear was leaking really badly. Adjusted the latch, and stopped about 90% of the leak.

Attempting to shift the door up, but simple cannot get most of the bolts to move. I’m using good penetrating oil and an impact driver — any advice?

Not sure about loosening the bolts but another trick is to get some backer rod from your favorite hardware store and tuck it in behind the door seal. This will push the seal tight against the door.

Default Did it work? Lifting the door and moving the latch back?

I just loosened the top hinge of the door and had someone pull up on the door while I tightened.

I also loosened the two screws that secure the latch and moved it back a bit so that it would hold the door closer to the top seal when closed.

I was wondering whether you solved the leaky back door by Lifting the door and moving the latch backwards

Holy thread resurection, Batman, but...useful thread for me and maybe for others... .

Took our newish to us 2002 through a car wash today to check a few things out and the dogs nearly drowned in the boot. There are three adjustments for the rear door I found. The hinges (2 x 3 x 13mm bolts), the door catch and the door guide (crappy bit of plastic above the latch). I levered up the rear door at the hinges, loosened the bolts, jacked up the door as high as it would go, and pushed the hinges inboard as much as possible and tightened, then did the same with the latch and guide. I also put a small diameter rubber hose inside the upper rubber door seal to expand it. Put a targetted hose flow on it and no more leaks. Just need to dry out the boot.

Super easy way to fix this. Cut a small slit on one end of the seal mounted on the car (upper). Slide in a standard diameter skinny vacuum hose into the seal and slide it all the way across the top. This effectively makes the seal less compressed, and the method fixes this leak usually.
