Arrow Novice just got Disco II, few questions about this beast!

Long story, but my wife just got her Disco II back after sitting outside for 4 years. I spend the day detailing it inside and out yesterday as it was full of dirt, grime and dust.

It has been worked on in those 4 years, mainly engine and transmission work, so that should be fine. We're planning to take it to a Rover place to get an inspection and have an itemised list of things that need to be worked on, which I can hopefully do some of.

For now, there are a few issues I want to sort out but don't really have a starting place to troubleshoot as I'm very new.

1. Back sunroof won't close.
I'm hoping this is due to a build up of light rust and dirt in the slides which just need to be cleaned out, but I'm aware it could also be the motor. I've read on here that if it is the motor, it could potentially be cleaned out and got back to working order. Is that the case? If so would it require taking apart the roof (or the material on the roof) to access the motor?

2. Speakers don't work.
I don't have any idea where to start in terms of troubleshooting this. I read that there is an aux unit under the driver seat. I was planning to upgrade the speakers and stock radio at some point, but I am definitely waiting until after the inspection as there may be more pressing matters before that. It would be nice to be able to turn the radio on when driving though.

3. Oil level seems low after being driven 400 miles.
After finishing a 400 mile drive, I checked the oil levels the following day, it seems to be half way between the max and min fill mark on the dipstick. Is that normal? Could that indicate a leak? On the drive I saw a small drop of some kind of fluid, but it was tiny and could have been something else. There is liquid dropping out of it, but from what I read it's just condensation from the AC Unit.

Lastly are there any resources I can use to help me work on this rover over the next few years? I was looking for a Haynes Manual but I could only find a diesel version, this is a Petrol 2004 Land Rover Disco

Thanks for the help, I'm looking forward to getting this back into the beautiful shape it deserves!

The oil consumption is bad, especially when the motor was already worked on. It sounds like an internal oil leak. This needs to be addressed first, the other issues are minor. Search the forum about engine mods, especially the PCV mod.

One of our members who is also a supplier of some unique Disco aftermarket parts has the factory manuals on his website:

Sunroof issue is mostly likely NOT stuff in the tracks, god to clean out but unlikely that it is it. Usually the motor stator rust to the magnets. Then can be disassembled, cleaned, and will work again. I think I may have posted a how to at some point. The motor can be removed without removing the entire headliner but unless you live in a very dry area I recommend removing the headliner, taking it to a shop, and having them recover it while you drive the truck for two months with no headliner so you can track down every leak. I KNOW I have posted how to's on that.

Oil usage is not that heavy (about a 1/2 qt) and is likely a leak that is likely a result of plugged valve cover baffle, do the PCV mod immediately, then clean the entire engine top and bottom using heavy duty oven cleaner and see if it is still leaking and from where. Also a good idea to snug down the outer valve cover bolts which are likely loose and leaking oil. Over time the gaskets shrink/compress and the bolts get loose and the gaskets start leaking.

Does radio come on but no sound? Likely a blown fuse to the amplifier under the drivers seat. Start by checking the fuses.

Awesome list, thank you, that’ll keep me busy for some time!

That’s exactly right, I checked the fuses (fuse 17) and it seems fine. I wouldn’t have been surprised if that was the issue though, because I get no sound at all, not even light static. Any other ideas on what I can look into?

Did you try to push the vol + button on the steering wheel? When the head unit gets disconnected from battery the volume level resets to zero. Then you have to increase the volume to get sound again. It is very common that the volume dial wheel on the head unit is broken and turning the wheel has no effect.

Yes, I tried both on the wheel and on the stereo. I also tried on both radio and CD, neither gave any static or hum or indication of the speaker working.

System Enable, does it provide 12V when you turn on the head unit?

C0098 (grey connector) pin 5 = System enable = Output

This turns on the power amp.

Where is this located? Is it behind the head unit? If so I haven’t tried taking it out yet, but can do so tomorrow. I’ll have to grab a multimeter too, so I’ll update once I confirm, thanks!
