Observations
Dunno dude, that's a good question. Plenty of good, capable cars suffer from issues that people solve with "reliability mods." Do not know why more people don't do that for Discos. Basically, if you find a good specimen, you can take care of the most minor annoyances within a few days:
1. Do a major service as outlined by in the Stickies
2. Install a new front drive shaft
3. Patch the common places where water leaks

Newer vehicles, especially those with high pressure turbos need to run at higher temps. Most dealers have probably gotten to used to dealing with the new stuff that they've forgotten everything about these older vehicles.
I brought my disco into the dealer for air in the rear tires awhile back because I was close, they all looked at it in awe and confusion. I think they were surprised to see it still on the road
The other thing is, a lot of info on forums needs to be taken with a grain of salt. A lot of recommendations are poor, uneducated or old wive's tales. Some probably cause more damage than what's already been done, but some, like the 180 t-stat, are well documented enough to be taken more seriously.
On that note, at 33C on Friday, I was running at 183 at stop lights, 181 driving on the highway and only got up to 185 when I shut the a/c off at a light. I can say I'm happy with my t-stat lol
