I burn 91 octane from quality brands (Chevron, Shell, etc) with no exceptions. If I could find 92 or 93 around my area I'd fill up with that.

You can run lower octanes at higher altitudes because of the decreased air pressure.

My 2002 has only used premium since my wife bought it in 2002. I thought premium was "optional" when we married in 2012 and I put mid-grade.

The truck mis-fired and ran like crap. Then I found out the engine timing was thrown off and the engine REQUIRED premium to run. And my wife chewed my *** out. I always was told premium was just a choice in general, any engine can run on regular unleaded 87. Not with my Disco. No premium, no run.

...as Mia would say: "DISCO!" ...most of my post's titles are a "Pulp Fiction" reference, since taking care of our trucks is just a series of "situations", just like the movie.

Thank you all for your responses so far, I guess I shouldn't go back to Reg, au contraire, I should climb the Premium ladder as necessary; so far things are running smoothly with 91 from Costco.

As per "the MPG situation", I've been keeping track of my fill-ups using the "Milage Tracker" inside the "Tire Plus" app since 2014; these are the actual stats: OVERALL MPG: 17.4 (highest I've seen is 17.7), and MPG FROM LAST FILL-UP: 14.6...

...so yes, "mid/high teens" MPG capabilities are real!

Thank you all again for your inputs, happy Rovering! ;-]#

The higher the octane rating the better the performance generally. You can add octane enhancer to each tank of gas but the economy is poo and it isn't worth the cost and trouble. Many stick cetane enhancers in their diesel trucks ............ duh ............ why?, most trucks are as aerodynamic as a housebrick on wheels

Ok, ok. You have to do a couple things for accurate mpg. Only fill up when your fuel light comes on. You will have to pump 20-21 gal. to fill up. Pumping 9 gal here and 12 gal there is not giving you an accurate reading. Two, use a pen and paper.

Post those results after the same amount of fill ups as you posted above. Your results will be different. I promise.

"Different fuels burn at different rates, so the spark plug needs to ignite at just the right time during the ignition stroke, otherwise you don't burn all the fuel before the valves open, which could cause a backfire (if you're lucky) or could cause your engine to try to turn in the wrong direction (if you're not) because the explosion happens before the crank shaft is in the right position (called pinging), forcing it back instead of over the crest of the revolution. Or it burns too hot and melts a piston. In either case, this will eventually lead to the engine blowing a nice paper currency-sized hole in your wallet."

taken from here:
fuel system - What happens if you put the wrong kind of gas in your car? - Motor Vehicle Maintenance & Repair Stack Exchange

I had a Lexus once, got it back from someone who borrowed it, left it on EMPTY, ran out of fuel before I reached the next gas station. Bypasser added regular-unleaded from a carry tank and engine was "pinging." It called for super-unleaded only like the D2.
