Hey all, Gonna be switching to Rotella 15/40 oil and Mobil 1-301 oil filter soon. My question is should i add a bottle of lucas oil stabilizer or not?
Oh its a 2004 Discovery SE7 Trail Edition. Thank you

 

Unless engine is well worn - as in pushing 200K, , Lucas not required. Lucas also good for machines that sit for long times between use, like a construction equipment.

I would agree, at this point just oil for oil change should be adequate as long as it is done at regular intervals of 3K-5K depending on how you feel about it.

 

Making the switch to Rotella, it will start cleaning up whatever was in there, and Lucas would slow this

 

In that case after using rotella for the first time should i change the oil say 1500-2000 miles? or go regular 3000-5000 miles? Im sure it also depends on how dirty inside of engine is

 

I would just go regular, I run what you are going to be using in my 03 with 120K and change every 5K. Land Rover say that in the 03/04 the service is every 7,500 miles. I have included the check off list below

 

The 7500 interval is for a perfect world, Rover say more frequent in arduous use. In some places Rover say arduous is trips under 15 miles, slow traffic, extended idling. Many use 5000 as a bench mark. LR4 now has a 10,000 interval. Great for leased trucks that allows cost of repairs to be pushed to the next guy.

Pix of one owner's at 190K, Rotella or Castrol at 3K - 5K intervals. Another that wasn't. And mine, at 185K ish, after a couple of years of Rotella, and six previous owners. My point is that even with Rotella a burned on crusty gunk engine won't become squeaky clean, even with the BG formula and the Marvel Mystery Oil I added. It is better, but once it is crispy critters it will take quite a while.

Maintenance of the PCV system is important, it gets rid of oil vapors that float around inside engine, and are part of the sludge formula.

If you don't want the normally runnig hotter than Hades Rover engine to look like the last two pix, change oil early and often, like voting in Chicago.

I found that I could soak parts in Berrymans Parts Cleaner ($18 gallon at WalMart) and get rid of the baked on stuff, sometimes just melted off, others needs a little scrub. Have read about Berrymans being mixed with oil and run for a short period as a "treatment", but it also mentioned that you can plan on seals opening up.
