Dr. Mordo- the Indie mech hypothesized that crud might be blocking the oil tubes that put oil up into the rockers, especially since the sound goes away with an increase of 100 RPM above idle. Rather than tag me with a big bill, he suggested this approach. I only did a little local driving yesterday and I am going to take a longer run today to see how it does. It was definitely less yesterday, so hope springs eternal, but I will never do a happy dance for fear of angering the Rover gods.

A local indie mech agreed that MM plus a quart of RISLONE might clear out some of the crap that is cloggin up the oil dispersment in the valve area. Tick was pretty nasty and went away with a small increase in RPM's from idle.
I would swear that the oil that came out of the pan was West Texas intermediate crude it was so black and on the thick side.
I put in 15-40 with one quart being substituted with RISLONE. The ticking has decreased noticeably. My plan is to run this combo for 500 miles and do the whole thing again.
Thanks to adolfojbonilla for this detailed thread.
...thanks MATT3502, glad it worked out for you too! ...it's incredible how black and thick that old oil comes out. I'll do my research on that RISLONE for next oil change. I do hear a ticking sound now that you guys mentioned it, but didn't annoy me, at least not until I read the comments from you guys! But happy it all turned out good, #HappyRovering! ;-]#
