Default ..:: The oil filter situation ::..

Hello Roverers!

I've been putting a new Mobil1 Extended Performance Oil Filter M1-204 each time I do an oil change on my truck, which I'm trying to do every 5K miles or so, plus Rotella.

But it's a bit contradictory to change a 15K filter -supposedly- every 5K... what are your thoughts on this, and what oil filters are you all using, especially when using Rotella on your trucks?

Thanks in advance for your input! #KeepRovering! ;-]#

I use the Mobil 1 M1-301, which is just bigger. I still change filter every change which is every 4k with Rotella for me personally.

There's a lot of places to cheap out on a vehicle. IMO the oil filter isn't one.

I'd like to say I always use the Napa Gold 1515 or the Wix 51515 which are the same filter, but I sometimes get lazy when I am at Walmart buying the Rotella and just grab one of the more expensive Frams that they stock. The branding changes from time to time, but I think the current one is called a Fram Ultra Guard and I think there is a Fram High Mileage also.

When at Wally World I either grab a K&N 3001 or the Bosch Blue Filter (3500 I think). If I grab a filter while at Auto Zone it's a Mobil1 M301.

I also have used the Motorcraft FL1A, but the last one I bought had cheaper parts it in vs the older ones I used to get so I haven't bought another one lately. WIX are good, but I just prefer Mobil1 myself.

In the past I've changed filters between synthetic oil changes but never oil without a new filter.

You and your situations.

Filter with every oil change.

Under the best conditions, with a perfectly operating cooling system for said oil, 10k mile oil is a joke for lubrication. And my employer runs a 10k service schedule. Now forcing a filter to run that distance, is ridiculous at best.

Our lumbering beast dont have even close to the best of cooling. So replace the filter.

Wix 51515 filter every 5k.

...thank you all for the feedback, they are very helpful, and some very entertaining.

Now, my question was not if I should or should not change the filter, it is obvious that one must change it for the filter of your choice, better yet, for the recommended one; my question had to do with why some people recommend that you use an "extended mileage" filter, when you should change it between 3.5K and 5K miles, and if not necessary, which filter would be the best option within those intervals; I have been using Mobil M1-204 since the first oil change.

why some people recommend that you use an "extended mileage" filter
Higher profit margin.
